Message: Too close for what? Mine gets 20 mpg and runs fine, plenty of power at the factory setting of .035". It won't make the coil run hot, or miss at idle.

Message: check your fuel pressure with the truck on but not running... then check it at idle... then check it while reving the motor a little.

Message: If EGR has never been replaced / serviced
Replace it !
You say you have " tried these things "
Have you tried opening the spark gap ?
Another possibility is injector timing !
Has anyone ' moved ' the distributor ?
This is what controls the injector syncing .
Also - cat - has it been replaced recently ?
How is POWER in higher gears ?
