Subject: V6 Overheats at High Speed IP: Logged
Message: 1995 3.9L V6 overheats at sustained highway speeds but drops down when I turn on the heater. Only happens on hot days and not so much at night when its a little cooler. Fan seems to come on appropriately, no leak from the water pump weep hole, no loss of coolant, coolant is good, rad in good shape, new t-stat recently, no water in oil/oil in coolant...Only code is about A/C but it's busted and I'm not concerned about it anyway.
Next gonna flush rad, any other suggestions?

Message: Possible cat is plugged up ?
Has it been changed ?
Possible faulty T-stat - not letting enough thru ?
How does it run otherwise ?

Message: Sounds like the radiator has some tubes restricted especially considering the age of the truck. You can try running flush in it but there is about a 95% chance it won't help any thing. If your truck has a brass radiator and it's in decent shape, you can get a radiator shop to rod it out for around $100. If you have a aluminum composite radiator, best to just get a new radiator.

Message: Thanks for the advice...T-stat and cat are both new, drives great otherwise...will have a rad shop do a flush and take a look at the rad condition

Message: The radiator or your lower radiator hose should fix it. Let me know how it does.

Message: I also had the same problem with overheating with my '95 3.9L. I used the process of elimination: 1)Flushed the cooling system including backflushing the heater core separatly. 2)Replaced the radiator hoses. 3)Replaced the thermastat-180 degrees. 4)Replaced the radiator cap. 5)Finally, I used a garden hose with a nozzle to spray the radiator fins from the fan side-I couldn't believe the build-up of dirt and bugs. Now the truck is back to normal-even on a hot day, the gauge is reading just above cold. The bottom line was less than $50. I hope this helps you out. Good luck
