Message: If you are reading this I thank you for taking the time to help me with a few questions. I just bought a 2002 Dakota SXT with 49,000 miles and I love it. I was wondering why there is so much rust underneath the truck? Is this normal? Or is there something that I should do? For a truck that is only 2 years old, I wouldnt think that there would be that much. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks again!

Message: did you buy the truck from an area that uses salt on the roads in the wintertime? that's most likely what has caused the rust.

Message: G'day Bigfoot I bought a 2002 Dakota SXT a few months ago too, mine had just under 20,000 mile on her an I love it. There was no rust on the bottom but I did a deal when I purchase to have it undercoated by the dealer. I live in Springfield MO and they use a saline chemical on the roads around here when we get black ice. As racerX said it does awful damage to the underside of your vehicle. You can buy the same undercoat the dealers use from Pepboys, I purchased some for touch up spots, Great stuff!! Where do you live and are you planning any mods??
Great info from this site, just research well.
Cheers

Message: check if its rusted through anywhere. Warranty should cover 60 or 100k miels in rust/perforation. If its not rusted through then do what everyone else said =)

Message: Buy yourself about 3-4 cans of undercoating. Also probably want to coat the insides of your rear wheel wells as it is only painted metal under there. Before undercoating, I would recommend pressure washing the underside to get all the salt chemicals off. After it is dired good, spray it. This should stop new rust from forming, as well as seal the metal so the existing rust doesnt spread. I did this to my previous car, a 1984 Dodge Aries K-car,lol. Had a little rust problem underneath.

Message: live anywhere near a beach??? That'll do it to you. whenever i go on the beach (you can drive on the beach where i live) I always spray off the underside of my truck with the pressure washer to keep it from rusting. But i think most people dont live on the beach.... but i cant imagine life without it... or my truck
