Subject: Idling too fast
IP: Logged

Message:
My 89 Dakota 3.9L V6 is idling way too fast (1900) rpm all the time.

I've tried unhooking the battery and re-educating the computer. No good.

Is it the idle control motor? Or is it my really bad exhaust system (that I've been putting off replacting)?

Or is it something else?

Thanks for any ideas.

did it just start to happen, or has it been building up for a while? I recently broke down and removed the throttle body and gave it a real good cleaning (it was filthy). I was careful about the IAT solenoid, but cleaned it too. When I put everything back on, it ran like a new truck. I also checked the TPS and found it was sitting at .79 Volts (which is ideal from what I can gather).
You might check to see if you have a vaccum (cant spell that for the life of me) leak around your TB

But of course, this is all just my 2 cents (2.4 cents in Canada)

im not too sure about this, but isnt there a little star screw on your tb that adjusts your idle speed? although... i dunno how that would just change on its own.....

Just a thought...

It didn't just happen all at once.... For about the last 6 months it would occasionally high idle at about 1100. But a romp on the throttle and it would come back down.

Then yesterday out of the blue it went to 1900 and stayed.

I don't think it's a dirty thottle body....had that all apart about 20000 miles ago for a good cleaning.

Another thing I forgot to mention -- I don't have a Maintainence Required light on. So either it's burned out, or the computer doesn't see anything wrong.

Jeremy, today I was checking my PCV valve to see if the pintle inside was free. I put it back on the valve cover and forgot to connect the vacuum hose. I started my truck and it idled around 1200 rpm. Maybe your problem is a loose vacuum hose? Relf.
