Hey guys, I just bought a 2000 dakota 3.9L and i'm really gettin tired of the stock exhaust, the people that owned the truck before must have ran something over because the muffler is dented so i went and bought a cheap ass walmart muffler tip (UGLY). So i wanted to put dual Flowmaster exhaust on. i was wondering if i had the duals come out the back instead of the side would i lose and power or torque? also 40 Series or 70?

Thanks for your help

I had a 40 series on my 99 3.9L and it sounded good. Even got a few compliments. Of course it wont have the growl of a V8 but for a V6 it should have a really good mellow tone. Duals are supposed to take away some of your low end power but personally I don't think I lost any or at least I couldn't tell if I did. Hope this is a help to ya!

You only lose with duals if you run too large of pipes... most say you won't lose if you run 2.5" in, dual 2.25" outs (or a single 2.5" out).

From what the guy at the muffler shop told me...you're half right. If the muffler is a 2.5" inlet, he won't lose anything. If it's a 3" inlet he will. All I know is Larry always recommends using no larger than 2.25" pipes if you do dual out. Now who should I trust here? Larry, who's well-known here for his great advice or some anonymous @sshole who's known for being just that?

And as far as the half right goes... my muffler is a Flowmaster 40 2.5" single in/ 3.5" single out. I lost nothing in low end torque...actually gained. I told the guy at the muffler shop that I didn't want to go any bigger than 2.5" out cuz I was told I'd lose low end, he said it wouldn't hurt it cuz it's still a 2.5" muffler, it doesn't matter what size the outlet is.

i would really like larry or sum other guy to tell me how a mufler with a 3 inch inlet would make u lose torque? seeing as the mufler case size is the SAME between a 2 1/2 anda 3 inch..there is no diffrence other then the inlet everything else is the same.

Depends. My brother owned this truck before me, and it had been "Midasized". They cobbled a small muffler on with 2 1/2" inlet, 2 1/4" out. I just replaced it with a Maremont OEM, and it's 2 3/4" in, 2 1/2" out, and the muffler body is 50% bigger than what Midas put on there. Sounds sweet now, more power. So don't assume that all mufflers are the same case size.

look at the flowmaster 40 series 2 chamber. check out the 2 1/2 inch inlet muffler and the 3 inch muffler for the 40 series 2 chamber. case size is the same, if its single in single out. why dont u call flowmaster and ask your self...look at the new super 40 series. 5x10 for case for all the mufflers. 2 1/2 inch - 3 1/2. explain it
