Subject: Changing out Clutch IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 dak 3.9L. I need to change out the clutch and all the other goodies in there and i was just wondering if anyone else has done this themselves and if so how difficult was it? I assume you need to drop the tranny from the driveshaft so i was just wondering if any specialty tools were needed? Is it a lengthy process? Any help would be appreciated.

Message: I haven't done a clutch in a dak, but I've replaced numerous clutches on ranger, vega, escort, mustang. use plenty of jackstands to secure the truck, remove the driveshaft, any connectors & linkage, unbolt the tranny from the bellhousing, and carefully remove the tranny. I usually round up a little help to actually remove and reinstall the tranny.
and a tip: if you plan on keeping the dak a while, remove the flywheel and have it machined. you will ensure the longest life out of the new clutch that way. when you reinstall the bolts for the flywheel, use some locktite on them. check your library for a chiltons manual - or buy one. they aren't very expensive

Message: usually no special tools are required (a torque wrench is nice to have on the flywheel bolts) If you are not machining the flywheel, you can do it in a day. or one long evening. if you do machine the flywheel, two evenings. I was able to do a clutch in an escort in two evenings (FWD is more work) and the mustang on a friday night.
