Message: I have a 2000 with 90,000 miles and the 3.9 engine. At highway speeds the rpm's spike fron 50 to 200 rpm for aprox. 1 second at a rate of 2 to 3 times per min. I had the dealer change the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. No change. The problem seems to be moisture sensitive as the frequency and intensity increase with rain.

Message: http://allpar.com/fix/80s-codes.html and look for code 51 for oxygen sensor.
Consider also the possibility of the torque converter locking/unlocking. The solenoid connector is on the transmission case, and rain may be splashing onto it.

Message: my parents had a durango that did the same thing on the highway. after numerous trips to the dealer (who couldnt fix a damn thing) they ended up trading it in because of that and the gas mileage being horrible (around 11 mpg)
