Subject: New Flowmaster makes v6 sound like v8? IP: Logged
Message: My friend told me flowmaster is coming out with an exhaust system for v6 mustangs that suppose to make it sound like a big block v8. He said he saw it on tv it might of been on horsepower tv. I checked flowmasters web site and they got nothing. I'm going to give them a call sometime. Anybody else here about this?

especially when you step out on the go pedal

Message: LOL!!
man, i am thinking of just removing the muffler and putting a straight pipe on my 'rango... see what that 5.2 really sounds like! It actually has some good grunt to it WOT... now the BB on the other hand... it needs a few more mufflers.

Message: Well that what it suppose to have said on tv, they could have been exadurating(the tv people0. But I guess it's suppose to come out, from what i understand it's like a pre muffler that tones the sound and filters out the unwanted noise that v6's put out. It's a good idea to come out with something like this. I think it would be a very big seller with all the people that have 6cyl trucks, camaros, mustangs, etc but don't have the money for a v6-v8 swap.

Message: It depends on the person.
Some people that don't know much about engine's will probably think it does. When I had turndowns and a Magnaflow, everybody thought I had a V8 in it. I still thought it sounded like a V6.
As far as pipes out the back go, I've never heard a V6 that I mistook for a V8. When a truck has turndowns, the resonation changes the sound to make it sound deeper and stronger. Still, when accelerating, you can tell its a V6.

Message: Well the muffler that he is probably talking about is the new super 40 series. It does have a little deeper sound and is not as loud in the cab but still sounds like a v6. It is just hard the get the v8 sound out of a small engine.

Message: This one is made for v6's, it's whole purpose is to make a v6 sound good, sound better than anybodys exhaust setup on a v6. If it even exists, i can't find anything on it. My friend said h saw it on a website also, I'll have to find out what it is.

Message: I installed the Ravin 77 on my 3.9l. When it idles it sounds low and loud like a small V8, but when I take off and it hits the power curve, it sounds just like any other 6 cyl. Unfortunatly, the extra two pistons are whats missing for the proper sound to appear and no "add on" will fix that unless its two more pistons. Of course with the price of gas, idling with the low throaty sound of my V6 is prefferable than the angry scream it makes when its WOT (well maybe not)

Message: I'm telling you with the right engineering you could make a muffler or complete exhaust for a v6 sound like a v8 all the time, not just when it's idling. Flowmaster has the brains, time, and money to do this. I know that you can't make it do this on your own. I'm saying a company is doing this not me, you people are making it sound like i'm trying to do this in my back yard. I think it's possible.

Message: I agree with Nick. In my experience there is nothting that cant be acomplished without time and money. I guess that since the tuners own the after market these days, their needs superceed our own for quality sound - meaning high pitched sewing machines that resemble finger nails on a chalkboard (I am old school and like the throaty rumble of a big block when I hear one). Of couse I am not complaining about my Ravin - I just got some good compliments from the local Penzoil guys after my oil change - they were surprised at the 6 being under the hood (even with the V6 Magnum badge on my fender!). They said "nice sleeper". Thanks guys, you made my day

Message: Sure, anything can be engineered with time and money, but that just the thing. I am an engineer myself, and engineering is very much about comparing what one thing is worth to another.
I don't think it would be worth the amount of work it would take to get a 6 to sound like an 8 all the time. The system would end up costing way too much and they wouldn't sell any, which would defeat the purpose.
Just out of interest - what would you guys pay for sound alone? Think about it. In order to get that sound, I'm sure there would be some kind of performance drawback, so all your money just goes into sound. Kind of a waste when you could put that money towards a power mod, or actually just getting a V8!
Why do you want your 6 to sound like an 8 so badly. Sure they sound good, but you can get a good sound at idle from a 6 anyway. If it sounds like an 8 all the time, people will just think you have a shi-ty 8 that isn't fast. It is what it is. You'll drive yourself mad if you keep going on this subject!

Message: i absolutely hate the way my truck sounds. i came from built just about open headerd 305, to this v6 it kills me. even with the race ready open it sounds even more like a v6. bla owell, theres only 2 v6's that i have ever heard that sounded good. one was a 2.8 v6 in a s10. it was just a flowmaster 40 series and the first time i heard it. i was loke did the kid swap in a 302? it sounded exactly like a mustang. if i didint do a oil change on the truck i would have never belived it wa a v6. the other better sounding v6 sorry to say guys is....a 4.3 that motor sounds good. i give credit when credit is due that motor sounds good. and its not a bad motor at all. it responds to mods very well. the 3.9 does too but i wish it had more cubes.

Message: Ya, I was rollin up to the lot one night and had a CD in that had the sounds of a Viper idleing then reving up. I rolled all my windows down and turned it up. With both of my subs poundin away it really sounded awesome. It really turned every ones head. They were like, Damn, I thought somethin bad was rollin up.
But really, Everything has its sound, there is a good 4 cyl sound, a good v8 sound, and a good v6 sound. Why try to make your truck what it is not. Just get a good flowing exhaust that makes a little power and be happy with it. If you hate the sound of your truck, you should have put the checkmark in the box where it said "5.2 Litre V8 Magnum"

Message: while I agree fundimentally with 93Dakman, I bought my 98 3.9l as a used lease return. I got the 6 cause at the time I had no interest in doing anything with it except for driving it. At the time I was knee deep in building my 1937 Pontiac 2 door sedan and it kept me happy with its sound. Last month, I wound up selling it, and with an empty garage began to get antsy for another project. I turned to the Dak, did all the basic mods and added a very nice high flow cat back. Now i am not complaining about the sound, but the sound, torque, and HP are just not where I would like them to be. So to get what I want by getting a new truck is gonna cost me shot-loads more than dropping in a V8 (not to mention trying to explain that one to the wife). Obviously not everyone can or wants to do that, and thats ok. I will do the best I can and when done, I will have all that I am looking for (hopefully).
but thats just my 2 cents (Canadian, 1.3 cents US)
