Subject: Bad gas mileage after repairs
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 91 dakota 6 cul 3.9, 220,000 miles. Recently I had a timing gear cover replaced that was rusted out and leaking. While he was in there he replaced timing gears and everything, as well as thermostat. Earlier i had replaced plugs and plug wires. Since the repair i noticed my engine runing rough when idling and my mileage has went from a steady 19 per gallion to 15-16.It runs fine at normal driving speeds. Could the timing be off and affecting my mileage so much, or could the wrong thermostat be in making it run cooler. I usually gor 300 miles to a tank now its more like 250.

It could be out of time, you could have a bad wire, plug, or you could have the plugs gapped wrong. All of these things can cause rough idle and poor gas milage. If the timing is out, i would take it back apart and line up the timing marks. Check all the obveous things first before going that way. If you had a garage do all this work you should not have to pay to have them correct the problem.

Good luck

Actually it ran pretty good after the repairs the rough idling only started maby a month after that.My plugs have abut 60,000 mile son them but looked pretty good.Maby i just need to change them again, mainly wondered if the thermostat was wrong would that affect my mileage like that.

Yea: There are many Mag Dakotas around here with 200K+ and still going strong. Ive got 131K on my 93 and I can see it making it to 200K easily.

Mine is getting close to 200000 and still going. Just made a 16 hour road trip at 70 MPH!!
Check your EGR valve. Timing is very crucial. I gained almost 2 MPG when I reset the timing to 10 degrees. I have yet to change the TB posisition and MAP sensors. I think one of these is causing a small stumble when the engine is cold. The stumble was smaller after I changed the EGR valve.
Ever replace the rocker arms, arm shaft and push rods? I did it to mine after a rocker arm started to make tapping noises. I noticed a power gain and smoother idle.
