Message:
Does anybody have any pictures of their ported intake manifold? I'd like to do all the work myself, and I have searched, but all the posts are from 2 years ago with no pictures. I want to go more for the daily driver than the performance...I'm not looking to do anything crazy, just want that little bit of get up and go, I have a dremel set and a decent grinder.

thanks too for the pics. i'm ordering a hughes aluminum belly pan kit, gonna gasket match and maybe bring the runners down a little while its off. can this be done with a dremel? i don't have a die grinder or anything, i may be able to borrow one. just making sure this is something a dremel could actually handle...

dremel will work fine... that's how i did my first one.

it's just a lot easier and quicker with a die grinder and a big air compressor/tank

I would love to do this mod, but im a bit afraid to take my manifold off and start grinding on it. I looked at the previous thread and I saw the pics that intense posted, but it doesnt show what part was grinded out. Couldnt anyone possibly explain this a tiny bit more?
Thanks

here are a couple pics i put the gasket on the intake, and traced
inside it with a sharpie, that is how much material can come out
on the intake, this ideally would be matched to the heads so the
size remains consistent going through the gasket when its
reassembled

So thats it. Cutting material from the top part of the holes and rounding them out will increase show a 15 hp increase. Explain what the runners are in those previous pics please. Im still trying to understand the whole procedure to the fullest

air gets sucked in through your air filter, goes to the TB, goes
into the manifold and gets sucked into the runners which bring
the air into the head, i know nothing about flow mechanics but
cutting the length of the runners down starts killing your low
end power and increases your hi end power, smoothing
everything and port matching helps keep the flow as efficient as
possible and decreases turbulence

don't ask me why they designed the intake like this, it's a piss
poor design and the weakness of these magnum engines

i wish they made an m1 for the 6, you could always make your
own with sheet metal though

I really want to do this as well. Those pics are great and help a lot, but I am still worried about just plopping the intake off.

Could someone lay out the steps for me:

I would imagine you need to drain coolant? All or just some? Is it just as easy as undoing the intake manifold bolts and pulling it off?

Thanks guys, I am getting stoked to do this one already!

coke,

i'll get you some instructions later... right now my head hurts and i dont feel like typing that much..

btw,

what kind of interest is there for these manifolds. So far i have done a few for some buddies but if the demand is there. I will start a little business out of it to help everybody out. What would be the biggest issue.. price or swapping the manifold?

are you talking like a core swap type deal intense? i'd rather have a manifold done right, since ive never done a port and polish to it before. any idea what you would charge?

if you have access to a manifold that you could gasket match and whatnot for me and then send it to me, id send ya back my core. ive got a hughes aluminum belly pan kit coming, so i wont need a new belly pan and gasket. i think i can handle the manifold removal, i did my tb, 1.7rrs and powertrax, so it shouldnt be too tough.

i'm bored at work so here are the instructions

1. disconnect negative battery cable

2. drain radiator

3. remove air hat

4. remove T.B.

5. relieve fuel pressure at test port fitting, might help to let vehicle sit for a little bit then put a towel under the test port and depressurize the rail (very little fuel will come out) then pull up on fuel rail carefully at each injector to pop them out, you can use some string to hold the rail up and out of the way you don't need to disconnect the rail from the fuel line

6. disconnect alternator and remove

7. disconnect a/c compressor braket and move a/c unit out of the way (i rested mine between the radiator and block with support underneath it)

8. disconnect upper radiator hose (some water will leak onto manifold unless you hand pump out hose)

9. remove alternator/ a/c mounting bracket on face of engine

10. unbolt manifold (get new bolts from dealer, you should not reuse these, get replacement gaskets for intake as well, this is a total of 4 gaskets)

check your belly pan gasket and see if it's blown out, replace it if it is or you see oil on the top of the belly pan (looking down the manifold bores at it), if you find oil in the intake use B-12 or some other carb cleaner and get the oil out of it, i would retorque all bolts back to spec

it doesn't take long about 1 hour or so for removal, you should inspect your intake bolts as you remove them and check for oil that may give you a hint as to whether your belly pan gasket was leaking or not

i don't think i missed anything here

racer,

that's what i am thinking. Probably something like this;

$75 gasket match, you provide manifold
$125 gasket match, i provide manifold
$100 for the works*, you provide manifold
$150 for the works, i provide manifold

* $25 more if your manifold has a full length divider

and if you send me your manifold after the swap, i can send ya $50 back.

how does that sound to everybody... probably couldnt get another 10 or so horsepower out of these motors for that kind of money (except V8 throttle body swap).

another mark,

looks good but too much work for me... I dont drain the coolant.. less than a pint will come out if your let your truck sit for awhile. And you dont have to disconnect the fuel rail. Just unbolt the four hold-down bolts.. pull up to dislodge the injectors from the manifold and set the fuel rail to the side next to the master cylinder (still connected to the fuel line).

cool, thanks intense. i'm thinking my truck will only need the gasket matching, possibly shorten the runners a very little bit and smooth them out. not sure if i should have shorter runners, since i dont run my truck up in the top end rpm range very often. i'm looking more for low end-midrange out of this mod.

if you have a manifold to get started on go for it, and then i an swap it and ship you my old one back so that i dont have much downtime on my truck. mines a 2002 by the way.

also, youre saying that i don't need to drain my coolant to pull the manifold? how about the distributor/cap/rotor? any of that need to be taken off or moved? sounds like it isnt too bad other than pulling the alternator and ac mounting and whatnot. let me know if you want to get started on gasket matching a manifold for me, my email is racerX_244@hotmail.com

i never drain the coolant... you will get a small amount to come out but not enough to to fill an 8 oz cup. This is a dodge.... not a chevy.. no need to remove the distributor, cap or rotor ;)

if you are serious... i'll start looking for a manifold.. dont have one right now.. only V8 manifolds.
