so ive found a complete differential and rear axle setup on ebay out of a '99 dakota. (looks like a 4wd, but an 8.25 rear which is what my truck has.)
its got 4.56's and limited slip in it, and looks like i could get it cheap. problem is, 4.56 would obviously be a really tall gear for me, i want to have 4.10. i figure i could pull out the 4.56s and sell em and have 4.10s put in before getting the whole assembly put in the truck, and then maybe even try to sell my whole differential and powertrax setup if the new one works.

would a 4.56 be too much gearing for my truck? ive got an aftermarket tire and wheel, overall height 29 inches or so. according to the calculator at ring-pinion.com i would go from doing 2159rpm@75mph in OD, to 2774@75mph in OD with the 4.56s. i don't wanna hurt my gas mileage any and i'm guessing turning that much more rpm is gonna make it suck through the gas a bunch quicker as well as put more wear on my engine. of course, i doubt i would have to kick down out of overdrive and rev it to keep the truck from bogging down going up long inclines, not to mention having to keep the throttle smashed down when its only spinning 2200rpm to try and keep it moving (two main reasons i want taller gears in the first place, my v6 needs it)

my question is, should i consider buying this whole differential setup and having some 4.10s put in before i get the whole thing installed? maybe just consider the 4.56s? just have 4.10s put in the rear that is already on my truck? any advice is welcomed

the guy said he got em at randy's ring and pinion (ring-pinion.com)

i'm gonna go with 4.10s, providing i can find somebody who will do the install for cheap. 4.56 is just going to be too much gear for any sort of freeway travel for me.
