Subject: New 3.7, Yes or NO? IP: Logged
Message: I have been thinking about getting a new dakota and the 4.7 is out of my price range, is the new 3.7 as good as the 3.9, if not I will probably hold off till I can afford the 4.7.

Message: i dont know from experience, but the 3.7's numbers speak for themselves! the 4.7 is great though!! i made a huge step up from a 98 3.9L rc auto. to an 00 4.7L 4x4 CC auto (both had/have 3:55, the 00 has LSD though) WOW night and day difference! it depends on what you want to do with your truck, if you tow alot, save up and get the 4.7L that would be better for towing..

Message: Well, here's the story, the 3.9 is a pushrod motor and develops 185 HP, I think the 3.7 is OHC and it produces 210 HP. I owned a 2003 3.9 CC, it was a dog. I'm not going to defend that motor, it's a piece of sh-it. I sold that truck 3 months ago and bought a 2004 sport plus CC 4.7. It is a completely different truck, funny thing is both trucks are CC 4wd auto. Just the different motor makes it a completely different truck.

Message: 2002 3.9 sorry typo, it's still a piece of sh-it though. the 3.7 is much faster, I haven't test driven the 3.7. I wasn't gonna fck around again. I went right into the 4.7.

Message: I just picked up my 04 SXT with the 3.7 V6. Traded in my 1/2 ton 5.9 Ram and I am stoked at the performance and power of the 3.7. In fact driving back from Kellog it was challenging to keep it under 80 mph (trying to break it in, but damn it's awesome). Go with the V6, you won't be disappointed.

Message: Sure...the 3.9 is a POS because its not as quick as the 3.7.
Come back to me 12 years later and let us know how the 3.7 is running. Mine runs great in my 1992 and has been extremely reliable. Is it fast? No.
I personally think the 3.7 is a great upgrade from the 3.9. Now, there's no contest between the Dodge and Chevy mini-truck V6's. But I'd wait to see how they hold up before calling its predecessor a POS.

Message: The 3.9L is not fast but its not built to be fast its a freakin truck people! Its built to haul, tow etc...The 3.9L Magnum being the 318 minus 2 cyl makes it extremely reliable and can put up with alot of abuse. I would wait to see how the new 3.7L that havent goten alot of miles on it fare up, I wouldnt be suprised to see them crap out sooner then these 200K+ 3.9L Mag engines!

Message: The 3.7 is a good match for the dakota and is a good replacement for the 3.9. My 04 cc has 11.4k on it and so far so good. I recently talked to a person who purchased a 4.7 and as far as milage goes its not that much worse then my 3.7 (17 vs 15.5 with less then 1k ). My uncles liberty has 80k on it now and his 3.7 is holding up just fine... how it will fair in the 4k dakota remains to be seen though.

Message: I just recently went over 24,3K on my 02 RC 3.9L V6 and it hasn't given me a problem yet (Knock on wood). I've been thinking of selling it or trading it in for a 04 CC 3.7L V6 but in a little over a year’s time I could have my truck all paid off so I might just keep it. 3.9 has been really good to me but it is just to slow. I'm wondering why DC doesn't have the 250HP 3.5L V6 as the standard V6 and the optional V8 be the Hemi. With either of those engines Dakota would be running circles around competitors mid size trucks. I would definitely get a 05 if it came with either of those engines but unfortunately the best engine option is the 4.7L.

Message: I've got the 3.7 in my truck and so far, I love it.
I only have 1500 miles on it. But the power pulling away from the line is great, and I have the 3.55 gearing. Its also great cruising down the highway, like the person above said, I have been suprised to look down at the speedo and be suprised to be going 80-85. It helps that the truck rides nice too.
Mileage leaves a little to be desired. I had a 97 S10 with the 4.3 and I would get 25+ on the highway (it was a 5spd. compared to the auto in the Dak). I just got home from a 700 mile road trip and averaged 17 - 18 (at about 70-75mph), but I expect those numbers to creep up a bit as the engine breaks in even more.
Overall I'm happy. If I was really worried about mileage, I'd be driving a Geo...

Message: I would definately take into consideration the 3.7L. I am extremely impressed with mine and the amount of power it has. I've had two 3.9L Dakotas and I already like the 3.7L much better. Like the other guys said, with the 3.7L you'll be speeding before you even realize it. As for the dependability of it, I would have no way of knowing. It may be as good as the 3.9L and it may not. We'll just have to wait and see.

Message: With the OHC that means some kind of
belt/chain driving them..
Will probably require replacement sooner
than the timing chain on the 3.9 !??
But power wise the 3.7 has enough..

Message: YES. I have an 04 Dakota SXT, bought it new and I now have 9000 miles on it.
I've driven a buddy's 3.9, and comparing it to my 3.7, the 3.9 is boggy and crappy. Coupled with a manual transmission and 3.55 rear, it's quick. Jet makes a performance module for it, and it's suppose to boost HP 15% through the midrange - does anyone know if those modules are crap?

Message: I have a 3.7L in a '04 CC 4X4 with manual. It is a good engine, but if I could do it over again, I would get the 4.7L. No real mods for the 3.7L and there is only a mile or two difference per gallon between the two engines. I have a cold air and a MagnaFlo on it.

Message: I own a new 3.7L with near 2000 miles on it. My god, its much quicker than the 2000 3.9L I had and it was mildly moded. But this new engine is great, I was able to chirp all the way up to 4 gear out of the factory. Now, I have a drop-in K&N and single in single out flowmaster on it (2.5") Dunno about reliable but it sure is a fast truck. I've beaten a quad hemi ram with it, but im with a 5speed and regular cab. But its a tough little motor. But is lacking very much in the aftermarket place. Hopefully they pick it up soon as its the standard engine with the 05's.

Message: My 04 3.7l sxt with a 5 speed is now at 16.5k and will be over 20k by the end of the year. So far I have had no problems with the engine or drivetrain however I have had some problems. The power steering pump went at 1,500 miles, the fuel pump whines excessively and will be replaced and finally the starter sticks in very cold weather. The power steering pump for some reason took the dealer a full week to replace and the other two problems will be resolved once the weather is cold enough for the dealership to duplicate the starter problem. Also i have had some minor problems with the suspension but that was fixed very fast.

Message: I have a 3.9 in my 1994 Dakota 4x4. I have hauled 3 tons from PA to ID and it now has 172k on it with the original clutch. Love the truck. Been planning on the future when it decides to say good-bye. Thinking of a 318 upgrade but not sure if I need new motor mounts, new tranny, etc. Nonetheless, I like the numbers on the new 3.7 but I've had great luck with my 3.9 and it still gets me 17.7 mpg.

Message: I've had a 3.7 in a Liberty for 2 years now. It's a nice, solid engine. No suprises. Should be solid for many miles. Now, the 4.7 is awesome! but as long as you dont need to scream, the 3.7 is a good runner.
