Message: Well, mom, your right that the stock pump need to be in the tank but an aftermarget pump can be used that is external to the tank.

Message: hire a knowledgeable mechanic to do it
need to make sure you have an excellent seal on the giant hole you are about to put in your tank by getting rid of the stock pump
i imagine it could be done, but why bother? the current design works, just a pain when you have to change out the pump, but how often would you change out the pump in the vehicle's lifetime?

over to an external why not just replace the
stock unit and be done with it

Message: You can buy the pump yourself and let a shop install it. If you let the shop get the pump they will rape you. Call a dealership and check the price... then hit the net and get a OEM.. I think holley has a HO pump out for the Daks.

Message: what about the check valve? My Dak is suffering from pressure loss when the engine is off so that it takes a few extra cranks to start it again. I have gone over it and figured it was the check valve which is also buried deep within the fuel pump assembly. I was thinking that and external check valve can be put in series with the fuel line (spliced in near the tank). I that way I can avoid the hefty charge to replace a 25 cent O-ring.

Message: Pumps on modern vehicles are often in the tank to protect them from the elements and keep them cool. Alot of older foreign cars with high-pressure pumps for fuel injection had them mounted externally, they were still hard to replace and were subject to corrosion. I had serious fuel pump wiring corrosion problems on a number of old VWs, Audis, etc. that I had.
