(I posted this elsewhere in other areas of this website as well. Not sure if folks visit only one area - or browse around.) I backed the 99 SY Sport DAKOTA out of the driveway this morning and I hear this slight "popping" sound, sounds as if it's coming from the bed of my truck. To make a long story short, when I got to the office I stood on the rear bumper and rocked it up and down. Seems as if it's a pop in the left rear - above the left rear tire. Now, it's cold this morning here in Va., maybe that has something to do with it -- but I have never heard this sound before. The truck has 38K on it -- too early for new shocks I am sure. All 38K have been on smooth roadways. Maybe it's nothing, but thought I'd ask in here to see if anyone has had a similar experience. Hopefully, it'll go away when it warms up a bit. Thanks in advance - Jim

I've had it happen often on my 98 dak too. I don't know what it is. I put a fab tec lift kit on mine with new shocks and still does it occationally. Only thing I can think of is that the rear spring does the S thing. Where the spring goes into an S configuation look. Usually it did it around turns for me. There is a thing about this in speedtweeks.net. They sell a Hydraulic snubber that goes on the leaf springs and it explains how this occurs. It's about the only thing I can figure. Don't feel alone, other dak owners have the same problem. Greg

I've got a 2000 dakota lowered and it made the same sound before i lowered it and still does. I've took it to dodge many times and they say nothing's wrong, but you ever find out what it is please tell me.

One possability might be, and I'm sure Bearnd will correct me, is that the rear end might be doing it. It only happens to me around corners so may the clutch in the rear in isn't right. I really don't know what else it can be. Greg

I read a service bulletin on something like this. You might want to check out http://www.alldata.com/vehicle_owner/index.html or http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/. I did not save info on this one since I have not had this problem (yet).

You need to change the fluid in your differential and add a bottle of friction modifier. Either ford or chrysler's modifier will work. The popping is the clutchs chattering.
