One of the guys that works for me told me this afternoon that DCX is planning on releasing Dakotas with what they call the "Displacement on Demand" Hemi in 2006. Both of his parents work for DCX in Detroit. According to him, it's available in the Durango in the 2005 models, and available now in the Chrysler 300. Supposedly, you have hemi-power (all 8 cylinders) when running around or just getting started, but then 4 cylinders are cut out at cruise speeds. According to him, if you tromp it, you get your other 4 cylinders back instantaneously. Anybody know anything about it? Anybody driven a 300 with one of these beasts?

The lifters are electronically controlled. When off, you are not pushing air in dead cylinders. The valves stay closed. Cadillac tried something similar, but using a different method back in the 80's with their V8-6-4 system, but ultimately recalled them. The new deal looks more promising if the electronics are up to the task.

I tried it out in the 300, I could not feel when the system shut down or turned back on the cyliders. My question is, is it always the same four cylinders? If so wouldn't that cause more less ware on half of the motor? What long term affects could this have?

The reason they do that is while crusing you get
better gas mileage

Yes you can not even tell when they shut down or
come on chrysler has been experimenting with this
for a few years now and it does work well with no
harmful effects on the motor
