Message: Don't know that it would cause pinging in the engine, but I lent my truck to a friend and she backed into a high curb and nailed the exhaust pipe. The shock apparently travelled all the way up the exhaust system because the cat started rattling like crazy. I have had it replaced twice and it works for a while and then starts rattling again.
After my emissions inspection next month, I'm thinking about hollowing it out and seeing what happens. That should at least buy me a year until I have to replace it again.

Message: Patrick,
What year is your truck? They just quit doing emissions testing here, so I am going to either take my cat off or hollow it out. But it has about 3ft of pipe on both ends of it. I have to do something about it because it has a loose baffle so it rattle really bad.

Message: Has anybody else had problems with their cat? I had mine replaced at 5,000 miles (it was rattling) and now it's in getting replaced again at 42,000 miles. Dakotaman, if it's the cat rattling, you'll hear it right where the cat is. Here's a test to find out if it's rattling: Wait until the exhaust is semi-cool and crawl under truck and smack the cat with your hand. If you hear a rattle, then it's probably bad. The cats have a 50,000 mile warranty from dodge.

Message: Guys I was driving on the highway the other day and my truck started to slow down it was still doing the speed limit but it felt like there was a banana in my tail pipe thats how it felt driving. Then I heard a ping from under the pass. seat and I could hear the air from the exust alot more now it didn't really gety loud just could here alot of air I was going about 75 mph.. Anyhoo I pulled over and looked ..There is a air tube (metal till It goes up into the hood area) it looks like it got rusty right where the tube screws into the cat. I have been driving it since it happen and if I go up like a steep hill or sometimes If I get on it a little as if I was going over an highway over pass It would sound like I am puching the gas pedal and letting go a few times but if I lighten up on the pedal a little it will stop but for the most part it is normal exept the louder air sound coming out... It has a muffler that is like 9 months old still looks good and don't think it has to be replaced but will be replacing the cat and that danm air tube (never seen a cat with that before But then again this is my first truck.. It idles kinda high too now so does any body now what that air tube is for what does it control???????????????

Message: pinging is inside the engine and the catverter is part of the exhaust system, the two are no way related. if you are pinging try another brand of gas first (not grade) then try another grade going from 87 to 89 first. if that don't do it your timing is way off and you may need to flash the ecm or get a new ecm.

Message: that little tube is for air injection. your catverter needs air injected into it as there is not enough oxygen in the exhaust gasses to allow the verter to do its job without a little help. if you want to stay legal you need to fix it. if you don't want to stay legal at least plug it as it will allow exhaust gasses into the cab and I don't think you want to fall into permanent sleep while driving.
