Hi, guys. I accidently posted this msg on the
dealer recalls board. Please ignore.

I have an '01 Dakota SLT 4X4 which recently
developed an electrical problem. It happens
when it is wet outside, and when I have the
wipers set to any of the intermittent speeds.
All of the lights on the truck, instrument
panel included, flicker. When I set the wipers
to low or high speed the problems go away.
This problem happened right after I was forced
to drive off from a curb (don't ask...) and
the truck got a real good jolt.

I have searched through a ton of the posts, and
while some folks had very similar problems, there
were no definitive answers. The closest one that
I found was replacing the central timer module.

Any ideas?! I need help because it is getting
to the point where I can't drive her at night
when it is raining!!!

Thanks in advance. :)

-Brian

Sounds like a ' short ' to metal
probably jarred a circuit board loose..

I had a problem kinda like this before but it was only the inside lights. This is hard to explain but here it goes. When the door closes it pushes a switch between the door and body of the truck. Well my switch was broken so if i hit a bump the light would go on. The switch thought that the door was open but it wasnt. Try replacing the switch. The switch also controlled the ding ding ding ding sound when i left my lights on.

Well the problem is getting worse. Now
the problem rears its ugly head whether
the wipers are on or not. It gets worse
if the delayed wipers are on......

I only see a couple of replies here.

Can any one help a Dakota brother out?
Please see the original problem.

Thx/Brian

BRIAN DO YOU HAVE ANY STEREO OR AFTERMARKET ALARM STUFF INSTALLED? SEEMS LIKE A POINTLESS ? BUT TRUST ME I HAD A GROUND FROM A PREVIOUS OWNER SHORTING OUT THE WHOLE ELECTRICAL SYS. SUCH AS YOUR ALL LIGHTS AND DASH AND EVEN CD PLAYER. ONE QUICK THING TO LOOK IS AT THE PLATE WHERE THE DASH BOLTS TO THE CAB ON THE DRIVERS SIDE BY ALL THE WIRES SEE IF THERE IS A WIRE WRAPPED AROUND THE MAIN BOLT, TRUST ME IM NOT CRAZY. I INSTALL AND ITS A REALL EASY AND CONV. PLACE TO GROUND AT BUT THAT SAME BOLT APP. CONTROLS THE MAIN ELECT. SUPPLY. IF THAT DOESNT PAN OUT LET ME KNOW THERE R A FEW MORE OPTIONS.

Thanks for the reply, Todd. The only
aftermarket thing that I have in the
truck is a LoJack alarm system. I can
poke around there.

Someone else in here seemed to be
having a similar problem and mentioned
a "chime" unit, or central timing unit.
Do you think that could be it?

Thx/Brian

Well the problem is fixed. I ended up going
to edmunds.com for my answer. They have forums
in there too.

Turns out it was my central timing unit. It's
a computer module located inside the truck
behind a leftside panel in the drivers foot
well. At least that is where it is on the
2001 Dakota. After ruling out shorts, and
gathering information from edmunds, I narrowed
it down to the CTM. I was lucky enough to find
one at a salvage yard for $100. Considering a
new one is around $300 not including installation
charges at the dealer, I got a good deal. It
was real easy to install, and worked like a
champ. One problem, though. My key fobs did not
work afterwards. Evidently they work through
the CTM too. Went to the dealer, and they
re-programmed them for free.

If you have this problem and go the salvage yard
route keep the following things in mind. Salvage
yards refer to the CTM as a chassis brain. Also,
I had to go out in the yard to look for one
because they had not stripped one out of the
wrecks. Lastly, 2000-2004 Dakota parts are
interchangeable.

yo tengo el mismo problema. He desarmado el tablero entero.
