Subject: High oil pressure & clicking sound

Hi, I'm new to this forum and not famillar with Dodges. My wife has a 99 Dakoda 4x4 with the 3.9 motor. This morning I started her truck and the "check gauges" lite came on. I noticed that there was no oil pressure so I shut the motor off and checked the oil. The dip stick had just a touch of oil at the end. I just checked her oil on Sunday and it was in the safe area. After adding about 2 quarts of oil, I restarted the motor and oil pressure went to just below 40 and the clacking sound started. After the motor had warmed up the clacking sound stopped and the oil pressure was just below the top edge of the acceptable range marker. Before I head to the dealers, I would like to some idea of what may be the problem and what it might cost me.

Thanx in advance
Dave

First question would be, where did the 2 quarts of oil go, leaking, or burning? How many miles running time being 2 quarts low? I'm not sure what the gauge looks like in that year, but 40 pounds of oil pressure would be fine. If the clacking was on the top of the engine don't worry about it until it doesn't go away. That's was just the rockers tapping because the lifters were not pumped up with oil yet. If it was run an extended period of time with little or no oil pressure the damage has been done, you're looking at a new or rebuilt engine.
Hope this helps
Jim

Thanks for the info. This past week end I changed the oil and filter and everthing seems to be running good. So i'll keep an eye on things for now. Again thanks
Dave
