Message: i know what a crack sensor is. the question was if it is possible to put one on a pre mag v6 or v8. the reason i ask stupid questions is because i'm in iraq and i havent even seen a dakota in over a year.

Message: why do you want a crank sensor?
i dont think your motor has one... and i wouldnt mess with it unless you were switching to a magnum. If you really want one for a premag, MSD has a crank triggering kit.

Message: well i wanted to upgrade my engine to a magnum. this is just one of many different options i am considering to upgrade my truck when i get back. my engine doesnt have a crank sensor or anything so that upgrade would need one if i didnt switch out the whole block.

being stupid doesn't depend on time. just because you haven't seen a dak in a year doesn't mean anything. stupidness is inherent, regardless of time.
you don't know what you are talking about.

Message: Adding the crank sensor is easy, if you still decide to go forward. There's a notch in the tranny where it resides, and it bolted to the engine block with a couple small bolts. You can make this notch with a grinder or will probably be able to pick one up easily. When Dodge replaced my '89 A500 tranny in '93, the bellhousing of the replacement had the notch in it.
Don't sweat the questions. It's much harder to figure things out when you don't have an example right in front of you. You're over there for us. We're here for you. Don't sweat the gutless pricks out there expressing their uninformed, Michael Moore-inspired opinions. There's always gonna be some useless chaff in the mix.

Message: thanks alot for the support guys. i hope to be back in the states in time for Christmas and hopefully my wife wont keep me to busy in the bedroom and let me work on my dakota. the only other question about crank sensors is do they count the actual teeth on the flywheel or is there a special plate that trigers the sensor? if there is a special plate does anyone know if it will bolt (or attach somehow) to the flexplate? also i assume most of this info goes along with the 318 being that it is almost the exact same engine. oh also no one answered whether or not i would need new engine mounts if i upgraded to the 318. thanks again for your support, hope to keep posting messages and learning more.

Message: The crank sensor reads what is a special ring incorporated into is the flywheel or flexplate as a single piece. It bolts to the crank in the usual fashion. This ring has a solid outer edge with 8 (for a V8) "holes" in it. As the engine spins, the sensor reads the holes and that's all there is to that.
As for engine mounts, it depends on what block type you use....LA or Magnum. If LA (pre-Magnum), you'd need to check with the boys at engine-swaps.com. They offer a bolt-in crossmember, but it specifies 2WD. Dunno about 4WD. If a Magnum V8 block, you should be good as far as the mounts go. The Magnum V8's received the mounting triad pad just like the V6's had all along, but again, the 4WD deal may be an issue. Not sure about that.Anyone?

Either way, I will pray for your simple soul.

When someone comes on a forum and ends a sentence with a "?"....that pretty much means they don't know what there talking about and are looking for guidance. Last laugh is on you.
Matt, look into a preMag V8. If you do a few small adjustments to your fuel system and ignition you can use carburetion and the sky's the limit on performance then.
God Speed and come home to your wife safely Solider.

Message: Agreed. Carb it if you can. I'm involved in one of the slowest engine swaps in history, but am putting a 360 Magnum in my '89 Dakota. It's a Shelby, so it's kinda a cheat since they already had provisions for a V8, but I'm putting a carb unit in now and cobbling the MPI stuff together for a later mod if I want to, or the emissions police decide to make an appearance.

Although, there are thousands over there who are still alive, and so are you. Try and see the good in it and be positive for them even though loosing loved ones is that hard.
