 Subject: crank position sensor on a '90 3.9L

is it possible to machine a place for the crank position sensor on a 1st gen 3.9L engine? if so does anyone know if there is a difference in the flexplate between 1st and 2nd gen engines? also can someone tell how this sensor works? my theory on this sensor is that it counts the teeth on the flexplate.

Not count teeth.
gen11 flex plate has 3 magnets..
