Message: Noticed anti-freeze dissapearing when i checked it regularly. Could not find for a long time cause there was no puddles or anything and have now found it sitting around the thermostat housing. think it is just a bad thermostat? This has been going on for a bit but just found the coolant on that area. Go figure truck is just out of warranty 38,000 miles or could it be a water pump? Where is the pisser hole for the pump? and how long to change one out? Thanks

Message: If I were you I'd replace the T-stat gasket first. Mine did the same thing....a gradual decline in the radiator fluid and I never saw any puddles under the truck. When I replaced the T-stat with a 180 degree on and new gasket it stopped the leaking altogether.

Message: Just watch your temps. I had a similar problem. Kept smelling antifreeze, but didn't see puddles and couldn't find where it was. Finally, my water pump just fell off!!! No idea why since I had never messed with it. It trashed the water pump in the process, so it was not a cheap fix.
When it finally went, it went big! Smoke and antifreeze everywhere. I thought I had blown my radiator apart! Crazy!
Best of luck!

Message: About changing your water pump...
It is about a 2-3 hour job. I changed mine about 3 weeks ago (my dak, a 98, had 128K miles!!). The hardest thing was getting the fan off. If you need to do that, invest in a strap wrench from Sears would be my recommendation. Made the job sooooo much easier. Good Luck!

Message: Dang the pump just came off??? I am gonna go check the bolts and stuff as soon as it cools off. The temp never gets above the 210 mark.
Waiting for my new parts from Speedtweaks to do the tune up and thermostat change. Hopefully that will eliminate the problem.
Thanks

Message: Thanks for the reply. All 3 times the water pump was leaking badly... I noticed while driving. Temp guage got hot and I pulled over. Then had it towed to Dealers twice, and a service station once.

Message: Dodge is using the same fan and water pump configuration as my old Nissan 280Z. I had my fan fall off the Z after a lengthy road trip. My 96 Dakota is leaking and I am smelling antifreeze here lately. My truck only has 60K so I guess from the chatter here that is about when they go kaputz, eh? I am going to order the pump and gaskets tomorrow. Might as well do the thermostat too while I'm in there, eh? The Pea hole is at 6 o'clock (on the bottom front of the pump right above the Thermostat) That's what causes the confusion of whether it's the pump or the thermostat gasket leaking. Duh pump is peeing on duh gasket.

Message: Hold the pully with the strap wrench and take a
big screw driver catch the nut and give it a few
good wacks, works everytime
Now I will be flamed saying it will damage the
pump, unless you go crazy with a 10 pound sludge
I have never had a prob with a water pump when
removing the big clutch fan and going to electric
I have never ran into anyone who had more than 1
pump replaced on the dodge trucks must be dealers
work causing them to go so often

Message: Yo J&J Auto,
I was thinking of replacing the hokey factory fan with a couple of electric units. Do you know where I can get a kit? Are they standard in the large parts companies? And in my quest for a new pump I learn there is two types, pressed on and bolted on??? I assume they are talking about the fan pulley. How do you tell by observation which you have? Since I have only the truck and my wife uses her car to drive to work I would like to get all the parts before I start tearing it down.

Message: I replaced the water pump on my 93 last fall. It began to leak a lot out the weep hole. It leaked a little while running, but evaporated due to the heat. But when it cooled down, it left a big puddle of coolant. Removing the fan clutch is the most difficult part.
Make sure that you remove all of the old gasket material before installing the new one.

Message: Hi in the past year I have put three on 96 dodge 3.9. One leaked, one bad bearing and the last one the metal pulley come unwelded and locked and broke belt. Well with pulley broke it is hard
to get fan off. It took two of us one with big wrench on front and extra large screwdriver on
the back on the impeller. Also freeze plugs on back thermostat and gasket and new radiator and bypass hose. dode is bad on water pumps. I changed coolant about every two years.
oh well it is running again 95,000

Message: Can any body help me? I have this Dakota sport 94
I changed on the past winter the water pump because it was leaking badly. I thougt I did a good job, but the nigthmare just begun, now when I drive in town with The A/C on the temp starts going up but no overheating. When I had to drive out of town every time it gets overheated so I had to stop on almost all the gas stations. When it was winter the heater did not pull hot air so I get freezed. even with a new T-stat, but now on summer I prefered to park the truck and I'm not driving it anymore. Do I need another pump?

Message: Mr Briones,
It sounds to me like you might have a clogged radiator. After I had 3 water pumps go out (they all leaked) I found a clogged radiator too. After I had the radiator rebuilt she's working nice again.
