Subject: 97 V6 4x4 Here we go... IP: Logged
Message: Alright boys... You fast guys need to help me. I have a 4x4 dakota V6. LOTS of weight being towed around especially with 33" swampers on. I was thinkin bout gettin 4.10 gears but i dunno what that'll do to my top end. I've gone on some sites for conversions from my old tire gear combo to a new gear tire combo. 3.55 with 31" to 4.10" with 33" It supposedly runs the enigne at less RPM at 75MPH and other speeds. Is this true?
ALSO I'm lookin to try and get more power out of the good ole V6. All I have right now is a K&N but doesnt every1 haha give me as many suggestions as u can. Money doesnt really matter right now, I would just like suggestions.

Message: Check around the other areas of the site for Bernd's list of good mods. He is the 3.9L guru, and I figured out all my mods from his advice.
The taller tire with the 4.10's would probably get you pretty close to what my truck is stock. I have a 2000 CC V-6 with 31's and 3.92's, and its still kinda weak on take off. I don't buy that 2" of tire makes up that much gear ratio, so that formula you used may be off. Just doesn't sound right to me. IF the RPM does come out lower, then it will only be a very small amount. Either way, I wouldn't want to turn 33's with 3.55's.
Here's what I suggest:
Cat-Back (I like Gibson, but brand doesn't really matter)
JBA Headers
Flowmetrics 48MM Throttle body
Cold air intake (Make your own, or intense performance)
Autolite 3923 plugs, 180 T-stat, Brass contact Cap and rotor
IAT adjuster
If you really have $$$, supercharger.
I have everything but the supercharger on my truck, and I can hang pretty even with a comparable weight 5.2L truck. I figure I gained about 20-25 HP with everything. Now I just need $$$ for the supercharger, body lift, new rims and tires...........
Where was I ???
Check out www.speedtweaks.net
Thats Bernd's site. He is excellent to deal with, and has pretty good prices, plus a lot of good tips and how-to's and stuff. I think he used to have 4.10's in his truck when it was lifted. He can probably give you some good pointers.

Message: I went in my glove box and found that i don't have 3.55 stock, but I have 3.92... I didn't think I did. Anyway, that's whats in my rear end now turnin those 33" mudders. Do you think I should still go for the 4.10, or should I do engine mods first and wait on the gears.

Message: No matter what you do, your gear ratio is going to keep you from really seeing benefits of mods. Like I said, I have the 3.92 gears with 31" tires, and its still dogs leaving the light with all my mods. Changing the gear ratio will get you back close to the stock performance. Thats what I would do, then go after the other mods.
The way I see it, if you don't have the proper gearing, all the horsepower in the world won't get you what you want. If you're running mudders, I assume you want to be able to turn them in the muck, and the gears will be the best thing you can do for that. Then go after your intake and exhaust.
Hope I helped out!!
