Subject: Popping noise IP: Logged
Message: As of recently on my 2003 dakota sport v-6 4x4, I have noticed a popping noise in the front end when I am making sharp turns such as those used in parking lot manuevers. I had my dakota to the dodge dealership and they replaced the lower ball joints. This repair made the truck handle much better and straighten the steering wheel, but never eliminated the popping noise. They said the upper ball joints were fine. Anybody know what could be causing this noise and a solution for it? The truck has 27K on it, if that matters. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Message: try greasing the control arm where the bump stop hits. (i think i said that right- its where the part hits the arm to prevent overturning)
thats what the dealer did on mine, in addition to greasing the tie rods.

Message: even tho the dealer said the ball joints are fine, the "popping while turning" sound is classic to unlubricated joints binding and un binding as you go around the corners. take my word for it the uppers are bad too. instead of having the dealer do it a raking you over the coals for new A arms, have your local garage do it, the total cost for both sides and an alignment is usually a bit less then the dealer wants just for the assembly, not including installation or the alignment, plus the aftermarket joints usually have grease fittings for much longer life.

Message: I was pretty sure that the uppers would be bad too since I am still getting this noise. As for the cost, the truck is still under warranty for about 9K, so they will do work like that for free.....I think. It will be going in for service Thursday, so I think I will have them look at the uppers. Hope this problem gets resolved soon.
