Help me out here guys. I'm stationed here in germany and i just got my truck shipped over here. I never had this problem before i had it sent over here. I've had this truck for three months. It's a 97 with the 3.9 and 104k on it. I'll be driving down the road and then all of a sudden it starts to spit and sputter ONLY when i hit the gas. It'll do it for maybe a minute or two. I'll get a little bit of a piston knock it sounds like in there also. Sounds like a fuel issue to me b/c it's only when i try to give it gas. Other than that it runs like a champ and is a great truck. I just went through the timing chain issue which i see is common. I'm thinking at 104k maybe a fuel pump acting up or a filter clogging? Maybe injectors? I didn'tknow if anyone has gone through this problem at all or not. I would appreciate any info.

It can be a number of issues including those you mentioned. Since its happening in Germany and ran fine in the US, I would guess that its bad gas. Is German gas manufactured to the same specs as US gas? How long has this been happening and has it been consistant? How many tanks of German gas have you put through the truck? Is it possible that you may just have old gas in it from the US? It sounds like a fuel issue to me. I would try running a tank of higher octane to see if that rectifies the problem, or add some sort of fuel treatment next time you fill up. Hope I was able to help

well i don't think ther german gas has anything to do with it. I've talked to many other service members over here and they've never had a problem with the gas. I've ran about 4 tanks through it. I just put a brand new cat on there too. The whole new exhaust system is new as a matter of fact. Flowmaster 2 chambers. I guess my next step is to check the injectors maybe. I'm thinking that if I'm getting some sort of knocking with the sputtering then it may just be one cylinder. I guess that'll be my next step. Seeing as how the fuel pump and filter will be my last thing tocheck b/c fromwhat i see it's all one assembly pretty much from what other poeple say. I reckon that'll cost some$$$$$. Well thanks guys, any further info would still be appreciated. If I target the prob then i'll let ya know.

It may also be an electical problem with the ignigtion. Being that it has 104K on it, when was the last time things like the plugs and wires were changed? Try giving your truck a general overall tuneup...plugs, wires, filters, timing, etc. My best guess is that a tuneup will fix the problem.

Last month is when i changed all that stuff. Yesterday i checked out the injectors. I only took three off to start with to see if they had any problems, well out of those three 2 of them were messed up. The casing on #6 was cracked at the bottom and the packing on #2 was deteriorated. I didn't even bother to look at the other three. I oredered some new ones from that five-0 motorsports guy or whatever it is. I got the 22 lb injectors. Nothing saying that is the complete poroblem but i know it's one for sure. When I get em in I'll keep you posted on the results. Hey by the way do any of you know how good those throttle body spacers work? Just curious. Thanks again guys.

I just installed a set of injectors from fiveomotorsports and they are quite a bit better than my stock injectors. I have a 93 3.9 and it had the original injectors in it at 160,000 miles. The old injectors worked fine, but the new ones cause the engine to have slightly more power at low to mid throttle range... I believe that the old ones leaked a bit too.

Could be that shipping it over dislodged and stirred up debris that is now clogging the fuel pickup.

i have a 92 v6 with 142000 miles with a similiar problem, since winter, if i let the tank get below 1/2 full the truck would bogg & even backfire when accelerating, but, when i filled the tank the truck ran well, although passing gear was iffy - sometimes had it sometimes not.
last week it ran bad even after i filled it.
now, i'm in the process of draining rhe tank &
pulling the pump to check the screen, in line filter has been changed but to me it acts like a partially plugged filter.

I may be wrong but I thought europe still has leaded gas. If so the cat would clog up, right?

I have a 2002 Quad Cab 3.9 and it seems to have the same problem as yours. Mine only has 42K on it but number 4 seems to knock in partial throttle postion under load. I just changed the Spark plugs (bosch+4s) and it seemed to solve most of the problem. On post gas stations in my area don't have super plus 91 octane US (95 Europe) so I use the coupons for the ESSO. As for the Gas I don't know what additives that ESSO or ARAL put in their gas but I do know that it likes to have octane booster run in the tank. Part of the problem we have is that dodge never engineered the extra wires for a knock sensor to regulate the spark advance and so the engine runs strictly from the program in the computer. I tried running a tank of the regular gas thru it but it was massive pinging...... I filled up the rest of the tank with super plus and that is what I use on a regular basis now. I know it is 60-62$ for a 100 liter book of coupons but it is worth the peice of mind for me..... On the Plus side it runs 90+ mph on the AutoBan without even touching 3K on the rpms..... a little 2 squirrelly at more than 110 though for me

so check this out, seeing as how sometimes i would get a check engine light sometimes and sometimes i wouldn't, i ran a diagnotic machine on it when it popped on and pulled up 5 major faults. Three being overvoltages on sensors and the other two were sudden loss of compression, and some kinda of vacuum fault. So i started thinking and looking at the manifold where all three of these sensors are plugged into. Seeing as how there was a vacuum fault i checkd the vacuum lines going into the manifold and sure enough. There was a nipple sticking out that I couldn't see because itwas behind another line. I started running my hand back around lines to see if i could feel any kind of physical leak and sure enough it sucked my finger right onto it. When it sucked my finger on it and cut off the airflow to it it started to stal out and do it's thing. I haven't had time to fix it yet but I'm assuming that's the problem. The weird thing is is that there is no loose hose or dangling hose that goes to it it's just missing period. So now I have to find out where in the hell the other end goes and get the hose. That would eliminate the vacuum problem and sudden loss of compression plus the three sensors. It's a stupid fix and problem but it'll make you pull your hair out. Hope it helped!

you should have one port that is a test port for vacum and would have had a rubber plug over it. there would not be a line for it.
