Subject: 87 Dakota gauge cluster question IP: Logged
Message: Hi
Just got myself a 87 Dakota. My question is,
the gauge cluster on this truck is a plain jane cluster with no tach or gauges.I have a lead on a cluster with all the gauges and a tach.Would this be a simple swap of the clusters or are additional parts required to make this work??
Thanks in adavnce

Message: im not sure but i want to do the same thing...
swap in a new cluster with a tach and a 125 mph speedo...
or atleast swap the large fuel guage for the tach and place the fuel guage in where it is located on post 88s.
good luck

Message: Don't waste your time...If your '87 didn't have the "extra" gauges and/or tach when it was new it won't be setup to use them now. I do know what I'm talking about here; I recently tried it. I still have the gauge cluster that I tried to use. Everything hooked up fine and the connectors were the same but evidently the wiring harness is tailored to which package the truck comes with new. Just my two cents....

Message: I swapped a tach cluster into my 91 with no problems. Your's should be the same if tach clusters were available for the 87 year model. I think a cluster up to 92 may work.

Message: I bought a cluster off Ebay for cheap so I have nothing to loose if it dosnt work.If Dodge's wiring is anything like Honda's and GM's(most likey is since the factories dont have 20 different wiring harnesses for each trim level)then the cluster should work,I know for a fact im going to have to change the sensors for the oil presure and the coolant temp(the sensors are cheap to buy new). The gauges use different sensors then the dummy lights.I'll post up once I have everything swapped in.

Message: I have a 88 and also has no tach and speedo goes to 85 its not worth the time go buy you a vdo put it in the corner of the window and call it good the truck doesnt hit any speeds worth knowing over 85 with the stock v6 i have a i have a 998a with 3.90 gears and my truck hits 101 when the rev limiter kicks in at 4400 and it take 20 secs to get there thats down hill with the wind so switching the cluster for a better look is not worth it they look just the same. The truth hurts but i love my 88
