Female Needs Help. Own a 1996 4x4 Dakota V6, aquired a horse, borrowing a horse trailer that the owner bought because the previous owner's truck could not pull it (very heavy trailer). Will I have any trouble pulling the trailer and the weigh of the horse with my truck? I have no owner's manual to check capacities (bought used). HELP!

My guess is with the v6 your towing capacity shouldn't exceed 5000 lbs.

How much does the trailor you bought weigh?
How much does your horse + the trailor weigh?.

I have a 96 v6 auto with 3.55 gears. I regularly tow a race car, equip, and trailer that is about 5000 pounds total with a big tire rack wind catcher. If I remember right, it is rated at 4500 pound towing capacity. I drive in some hills in southern Indiana & Kentucy. 3.92s would sure be nice! With a few mods (injectors, ignition, exhaust, 180 degree thermostat, onboard air compressor, and others) I can keep 65+mph on about any hill I run into in this area with OD off. (Gas milage is about 13mpg towing as long as I stay around 65) I do not recommend towing much weight at all in OD. I got 145000 on the first transmision and am up to 160000 now with no other issues on the truck. Lets see if I can get to the 1/2 million mark on this one too, I had 540,000 on my last truck (Dodge wantabe Ram50 4x4).

I hope all this helps, you can use the search function.

Keep inmind when towing, you need to know the trailor weigh, weight contents, what kind of hitch you are towing with. A bumper hitch will not tow a horse trailor. You need a class 3 equalizing hitch at a minimum or a properly set up fifth wheel hitch if necessary.

thank you so much for the great information that you gave me.
As for your questions on the weight of the trailer and the horse, I will have to find that out. I did find out that the truck that could not pull the trailer was a S10.

Your welcome, One thing to consider, if your truck doesn't have a transmission cooler, you might consider having a heavy duty unit put on your truck with a transmission fluid change to Chrysler ATF+4 or Amsoil synthetic fluid.

the others are just guessing according to dodge and the 1996 dealers sales brocher, the six without a tow package can handle 2000 lbs, with the optional tow package and 3.92 gears the rc 4X4 can pull 4100 and the cc 4X2 can pull 3800 the largest rating for the v-8 is 6,800 rc and 6,200 cc 4X4
if you do not have the tow package and a 5.2 eight I would sell the trailer as the v-6 has less power then the s-10 4.3 does.
