Has anyone had any problems with their fuel gauge bouncing around randomly and basically not working at all. I have a half tank of gas and it reads anywhere from half a tank to empty and is constantly bouncing around.

Yes - common situation..
Sender in tank ( but it is part of fuel pump )
= expensive to replace..
One cause of failure is use of SHELL gas.
Their additives ' eat ' the sender..

So do I need to replace the entire fuel pump, or just the sending unit?

From what I understand the whole pump must be replaced, I assume yours is a Gen II model (i.e. 1991-1996). Mine is a '91, I bought it last year with this problem, the gas light still works and I hit the trip meter each fill up, haven't ran out, just annoyed by this common problem. Not worth the time or expense to replace for me, when the fuel pump dies, then she will be fixed.

I never had the problem on mine until I replaced fuel pump assembly, apparently there is a certain position it has to be in for the float on the unit to operate properly and mine is now out of position. I thought I had it in the original alignment but when I completed install, the guage was stuck at 1/4 tank. I was able to get mine shifted enough to free up float but it is now erratic in operation.

people...try searching the site!! There have been numerous posts about this issue. You can replace the sending unit WITHOUT having to buy the entire fuel pump. $40 fix.
