Subject: Bought a Used Dak 98 IP: Logged
Message: I bought a used 98 dak v6 from the autction. It's Cherry, fully loaded but for LSD, Purple with a Leer Topper, 3.92 gears and Tow kit. Anyway, I found this place and have fixed the ABS light/Break light < 25 no speedo problem, by replaceing the rear diff sensor. I reset the PCM and no more lights. I thought it was still acting funny so I took it to AutoZone for a scan, Trans Temp sensor low voltage. I had them clear it. Now the Truck shifts like new. All in all I am very happy, I always wanted an GenII for the first day I saw one.
My new issue is Ping/Knock, It runs like a beast in the AM, but in the Afternoon I get Ping @ 1500-2500 on the Hwy. I figure its the out side air temp. I am going to put in a 180-Tstat, colder plugs, brass cap and roter and see if it helps. The last outstanding thing is the Cruise Control, it wont set. Every thing looks good, light comes on. but wont set. Any advice on that ?
Any how, great site and when I have a few extra bucks I will join up.

Just so ya know, 98 is a gen 3...lol. But welcome to the boards. What was your transmission doing when the temp sensor had low voltage? I'm having tranny problems currently and I'm trying to diagnose the problem. I have a red 98 rc.

Message: The shifts were all very hash and the engine felt like it was choked up at hwy speeds. I really did not know anything was wrong, I just wanted the free scan to set my mind at ease.
After the code was cleared it shifts smooth you can hardly even feel it unless you have your foot in it. I think the PCM was trying to save the Trany from an overheat. code was P0712. I was going to get a new sensor just in case but cant find the part#. Any way it's still shifting smooth .

Message: Did my first mod. I changed the plugs to 3923's gapped to .40,the old plugs were AL 5224's and were all about .50 but 1 was like .30. I took it for a spin and hot dam .. it was flat out moving. I cant wait to do some more it to. This Truck engine is clean I only had to wash my hands off once, I did notice that the heat sheild on the Driver side exaust manifold is missing and there was a loose stud. the stud was not broken so .. I just tightened it up. Next up ... Brass Cap / rotor and 180-T stat. I am going to do one at a time to see what each tweak does for me. Then it's a FIPK and TB.

Message: Expect your gas mileage to drop some with that 180 T-stat...I don't regret doing it, but my mileage did drop. I'm beginning to wonder if I got an O2 sensor that's starting to fail...I'm only getting around 15.7 mpg...16.2 when I baby it. I need to get a multimeter so I can check that stuff.

Message: Yup,
I would HIGHLY recommend at least porting your old TB if you don't want to but a performance one. For the $1.80 it costs for the new gasket and a couple hours of time, it make a phenominal difference. Not to mention feeling good about cleaning up all that crap that inevitably collects in the TB. Doing things yourself always feels better than just bolting on someone elses work.
But back to the TB, I have a Ram with the 3.9 in it (so heavier truck, bigger frontal area), and just taking out the torque step from the TB saved me a shift on moderate hills. I can usually climb them now without having to grab a lower gear. Can't always accelerate uphill (I also have the 3.21 rear, what a slow combo!), so I noticed a much needed difference. If you need any help, email me.

Message: Well after driving to and from work today. I do have a leak in the exaust manifold on the driver side. I hear the ticking now that the knock is gone. So looks like I gotta fix the wore out stuff, before I can have anymore fun. I still have the 180-T to put in maybe this weekend. and pick a brass cap/roter. that going to have to hold me for awhile, tell I get that friggin leak fixed.
I am going to get a fastman .. I think for the TB, if it gets me a few more MPG it's worth it. the computer thing is showing 16.7 MPG over the last 40Gs and I had my foot in it today.

Message: I would not pay a lot of attention to the overhead computers mileage reading. Mine has shown 18 mpg for 142000 miles and my milage has varied a lot. the only way to figure it is to record all gas purchases and calculate mileage. I am currently averaging 20 mpg over the last 1400 miles and getting about 19 city and 22.5 on the highway.

Message: Ok... Update on my progress.
The leak is not so bad, I only hear it at about 60-80MPH on the HWY when I gas it and do the dog with my head out the window. I am going to let it ride for now.
I got up today with the idea of doing the T-Stat swap. But after I got in there I saw about 1/4" deflection slack in the TV, so I took that out. then I notice that the coil wire was not re-routed per the TSB so I did that too.
Again what an Improvement, my shift points are much better now and kick down is working great too. No more bog in the engine when getting out of O/D.
Now, I think that the performance is back to "like New Levels" and I can look into some other issues. I am getting a shudder when hard braking, so I am going to get the wheel balanced checked along with the front end. My money is on the roters.

Message: Ok... I have changed out the Cap / rotor and Plug wires. it's a Standard brass cap and rotor, I use Standard (life time) 7.5mm wires so I did not have to mess with the stock clips. The old cap was really really bad, as well as the old rotor, I dont think it was ever changed.
Well the Old Truck is reborn again, Now I am sure I have it running tip top for a stock moter, purrs like a cat at idle and pulls hard through all the shift points.
Now I am going for CAI, with a FIPK Gen II, also looking at replacing the TB with a Fastman 46mm.

Message: Great! Its fun to do little things to your engine and feel it "wake up" :-)
I just love to hear a smooth idling engine (unless its cammed out :-P )
The 3.9s (in my experience with them) usually have a funny idle. The needle never really holds still even with the a/c off.... I think its because its an odd fire v6....
I once made the mistake of running a standard cap and rotor, with Bosch platinum plugs and an accell coil. Talk about toasting the rotor button!!!! WOW! It only lasted about 10K!! It looks like it would have only gone another 100 miles before the spring would have popped out of the cap!!
Have fun, and dont let anyone dog on your 3.9L. It’s a solid, reliable motor with a LOT of potential.
Keep Truckin'
