Subject: 3-4 Shift Malfunction IP: Logged
Message: Recently my 3.9 Dakota started shifting out of OD into 3rd after I let off the gas. It only happens after it has warmed up and been running for a while (15min or so). Sometimes it will shift back into 4th, and sometimes it won't.
I took it to the dealer, and they found the chk engine light P0783 - 3-4 shift malfunction. They wanted $1600 just to take out the tranny and see what was wrong.
Anyone have any ideas what the problem is? I have heard this is the 3-4 shift solenoid causing the prob, is this true?

Message: 3 years ago, I was in Colorado visiting my parents. On the trip there (about 1,000 miles), it quit shifting into 4th gear at all. I figured it would need major work. I took it to a Dodge dealer and they said it probably needed a new solenoid. It was going to cost ~$350. I didn't have that much money with me. They said they could try the Wynn's chemical flush on it and it could possibly help. I told them to try that. Well, now 3 years later, I haven't had any more problems with it. The chemical flush did the trick. I think it was ~$150. Perhaps this would cure your shifting problem. Your trans sure doesn't need to be removed to fix it.
