I have a 97 3.6 and was wanting to replace the fuel filter. How involved is the job and how much could I look to spend?

What are some ways that I can improve the proformance of this truck with 150,000 miles on it?

Seriously, you need to replace the ENTIRE fuel pump assembly.
It runs anywhere from $250 to $400 you can find it online or
worst case scenario the dealer. The filter is not available
anywhere seperately. The dealer will charge you an arm and a
leg to replace probably $400 or so. You can either drop the
tank and replace yourself or lift the bed off. If you remove the
bed you might want to order a set of replacement bolts from the
dealer as according to the FSM they are impregenated with a
material that fastens them securely into the bed and they
shouldn't be reused. The bolts are cheap.

Another Mark that is not necassarily true. You can buy just the filter from Dodge Dealers and they cost about 40 bucks.

you cannot buy just the filter. The filter is apart of the fuel pump/regulator assembly. Most people thing that the little screen at the bottom of the pickup is the fuel filter, but they are wrong. The filter is actually inside the fuel pressure regulator that sits on top of the pump assembly. I dont know if you can order just a new regulator (dont know why you wouldnt be able to) but you can replace the regulator and have a new filter. I found this out by gutting my regulator when i did my big block swap. However, dodge says you should never need to change it unless there is a known contamination in there... but at 150,000, i would change it.

Here's gonna be the easiest way to do it (without removing the pump or tank).

1. remove the bed (you and a buddy can do this)
* unbolt the 8 bolts underneath
* remove the rear lights
* unscrew the gas cap unit
* lift bed off
2. remove fuel line off of regulator (on top of tank)
3. pull up on regulator
4. remove clip that holds the hose on the regulator
5. replace regulator in reverse using new hose clamp in place of clip

but, i would take the pump out and replace the pickup screen, too.

wow, I had no idea it was going to be that involved. I checked my Haynes manual about it, doubted the work involved, and thought I would double check here.

Is there anything else that I can do to get better performance and mileage out of my truck?

i was thinking about opening the fuel tank on my truck to see if i could figure out why my fuel gauge gets stuck at 1/2 a tank (read on here that the float might hit the side of the tank.

Just wondering what the easiest method for doing this is. In the past, i had an S-15 and replaced the fuel tank. I did all the work under the truck, removing the tank straps and everything. Is it easier to just remove the box?? never done this before. is there any issues with getting the body lines of the box and truck to line up after the box has removed??

If you have any tips on this or the fuel gauge problem, it would be very helpful.

You absolutely can get the regulator/filter assembly but only from a Mopar dealer. Costs around $100 and you have to remove the tank to install it. Part number for 2001 model is: 4798825-AC. Order from River Oaks Chrysler in Houston.

In theory it was supposed to work out that way. But in the field, I'm seeing them get restricted at 60-80 thousand miles. People that run up to 100k are causing the pump to over work and fail. Thats when you get to replace the whole fuel pump module to the tune of $500. I think Chrysler realized the 150000 mile filter interval was causing alot of fuel pump failures and made the filter available seperate to stem the tide.

Well I have never replaced my fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator or any of all that its all still stock and I have almost 160K on my truck...still running strong...I guess its just the gas you use or sometime you can get a really weak pump.

I've replaced the filter on mine, but my truck runs much better on a fuel tank of gas than on 1/4 of a tank. It can be runnign pretty rough going into a gas station and coming out it is running much better. Mine also has 160,000 miles.

mike,

you havent had to replace those because you have a seperate inline fuel filter. We have to replace that on our genIII's because it is one whole unit. It's not because our regulator or pump's are bad... it's because we dont wanna put 150K miles on one filter.

One time i took my truck to have the oil changed and i was at like 48K miles. The clerk was there trying to sell me stuff and asked if i wanted my fuel filter changed... knowing what i know, i asked him "how much?"... he said, "$30, filter included".. me, "REALLY!?!?!". Just then, his boss came out and was like "no no no no no!!!"

kinda funny
