Subject: 3.9 to 318 similarities
IP: Logged

Message:
My truck is an 87 3.9 auto w/ carb.
It is my understanding that the 3.9 and 318 are identical except for the extra cylinders. Is this accurate? Are the deck heights the same? If so, will a distributor from a 318 physically work in this engine? I don't trust the idea of the untroubleshootable SCC controlling my timing. My thoughts are to run a vacuum advance 318 distributor and a "dumb" 2bbl carb in order to relegate the SCC to the position of trotline anchor.

What do ya'll think?
Bill

Cap is the least of problem..
The ' shaft ' of 8 cyl has 8 " lobes "
On a six has 6 = Not that [ interchangeable ]
You will need to find another
source for a vacuum advanced dist.
Maybe a " racing " / " performance " shop

Though not listed in the 2002 catalog (there's lots not listed, but still readily available), this may still be obtainable. Check the dealer, and ask them to look up P4529402. This is the full electronic conversion kit with vacuum advance distributor for 3.9 V6. Failing that, try, P4529401, which is the distributor from the ...9402 kit. Then you can get the ballast resistor and other parts as used with the V8 kits. Also, someone like Mancini Racing may be able to hook you up.

Thanks for the input. Looks like it'll be easier to just swap engines.

Thanks,
Bill
