Subject: Please help (cooling system drainage) IP: Logged
Message: In order to drain the cooling system on a '91 Dakota 3.9 V6, I noticed you have to remove the block plugs to fully drain system.
I was wondering why you couldn't take off the lower radiatior hose, since it comes down at an angle from the block. Wouldn't that drain the block, too? Escpecially if you were going to replace the hoses anyways. What would be wrong with this method?
Thanks much,
Don

Message: I just did a radiator flush and tried that and it did not work. You can remove the drain plugs from the block, but they are not guaranted to go back in. Just drain the system (gets about 50% out) fill with water, let the engine run. do this a few times and you should be ok. Hope that helps some.

Message: Yeah I was concerned about the plugs, as I've heard you're risking disaster by taking them out.
Thanks Matt, I appreciate your response.

Message: It is simple and doable to remove and replace the block plugs. DO NOT EVER RUN MOTOR WITHOUT COOLANT. . What you can do is put a garden hose in the filler neck, remove the plugs, turn on the water, then run the motor. But never run a motor without coolant.
Also, dropping the lower radiator hose leaves a bit of coolant in the water jacket. This is a good option but a small amount of coolant will remain. You could use the garden hose method I wrote about above to remove this small amount. Run the heater on high with the fan on high. This will help control the engine temp and flush the heater core.

Message: I would not remove the plugs in the bottom of the radiator. Mine are plastic and I'm sure that they will break if I could get them out at all. I just removed the lower radiator hose and the coolant comes out very quickly.
My goal was not to flush the system though. It was just to change the waterpump.
