Subject: This is scarry....another tranny problem IP: Logged
Message: I had just got my tranny rebuilt and running perfect up until yesterday...I had it rebuilt like 3k miles ago. Well yesterday night my OD WOULD NOT kick in at all. I Have an O/D button on the side I have a GEN II Dak and for people who have this if not everybody who has a GEN II has this know what Im talking about. Well the O/D button was showing on or no light on. Well I pushed it and no light came on and pushed it and nothing happened like it was stuck.
Well this morning the button works just fine and my O/D works great. Truck runs fine and the tranny too..anyone have any wierd similar problems like this with the O/D issue? I will be taking my truck to the tranny place and ask him WTF??

Message: Hmmmmmmmmm.
I would check your reverse lights to make sure that they work when they should. Think I'm crazy? If they don't work, or they come on at hte wrong time, then you have a problem with the neutral safety switch or the linkages that line up with it.
The neutral safety switch has three wires on it. When the middle wire is grounded, the PCM knows that the transmission is in neutral or park. When this wire is grounded, your overdrive will not engage and your cruise control will not set.
I wouldn't be surprised if the linkages don't line up properly inside the transmission (or the neutral safety switch is not screwed in properly) and that middle wire (center pin on the neutral safety switch) is being grounded and disabling your overdrive (and cruise).

Message: Start with the easiest things first. It's likely the wiring to the switch being loose. Take the trim panel off the dash with T-20 driver, then unscrew the small panel holding the switch. Look in back and make sure the wires are plugged in. While looking at my headlight switch wiring last week, the O/D switch wires came unplugged with little effort.
This is something that you can check for free without paying a tranny shop whose specialty is not wiring.

Message: Thanks for everyones advice as soon as this problem occurs again I will check the switch and the wiring...Im going to have the tranny guy check the linkages to the tranny cause its still under warranty and he will do that with no effort im sure....thanks again and opefully it just doesnt happen again cause i bet when i was doing 60 with no O/D i was more than likely getting single digits for gas mileage and was around 2900 rpms

Message: The button has 12 volts to it and when you push it it sends a 12 volts to the PCM. It in turn grounds the side of the light so the light comes on letting you know it has taken the trans out of overdrive.
NOTE: If the light ever comes on while your driving you could have a big problem. The light is also a signal from the PCM that it has detected something has gone wrong in the trans, like it's to hot, so be careful.
Good luck.

Message: Well it happened again today I was driving home and noticed my O/D wasnt working.....Now I have had bad connections on my battery latley so when i try to crank it up it does nothing so i twist the connector on the battery and when i do the truck will finally hook up and start. But when i do this my O/D seems not to work for a wierd reason. Well I shut off my truck in the driveway and tried to start it up and the battery died so i jumped it off and started it and turned right over. I drove my truck and NOW the O/D works, button and all...WTF???

Message: I'd say it's near wherever your battery wires are that require twisting to get the truck to crank over...chances are there's a short somewhere around there or a bad ground.

Message: Check also behind the O/S switch - they're just fastons that plug into the switch, they can come loose or become intermittent easily.
