i have tryed to search for an answer but cannot seem to find it. I am doing a tune up this weekend and plan on indexing my plugs. I have a 99 dakota sport 4x4, 3.9. Which way should the gap face when doing this? Towards the front of the vehicle, intake, or rear of the vehicle. I am not looking for a ton of performance but mainly some extra gas mileage. I already picked up a napa cap and rotor along with Bosch Platinum plugs and am also going to purchase MSD 8.5 wires. Thanks in advance.

Looking at where the spark plug goes in, the gap should face the intake valve. even if set the plugs up for 12:00 oclock, you should close enough. Ideally the #1 and #5 cylinder at 1:00 #3 at 11:00. On the other side (passenger side) form the back #6 at 1:00, #4 at 11:00 #2 at 1:00. Just set them so the gap on each plug will be at 12:00 you will have them setup good enough. I marked the white part of the plug with a magic marker to indicate the position of the gap and used a flash light to look inside the round heat shields to check position. Cylinder #5 back toward the firewall on the driver side was a pain to check due to the vacume booster for master cylinder being in the way.

I just reindexed my spark plugs on my dak, I found out that I had them in the wrong position, I just happen to have a set of cracked heads from my son's dak and I used one of the heads to check plug position before putting them in the truck. I got it right this time and it made a real difference.
