Subject: Looking for a better axle IP: Logged
Message: im on a search for a better axle for my dakota since mine went to heck on me in 15,000 miles
Ill get it fixed under warrenty but im just getting some options open just in case it wasnt a fluke and does it again except when i dont have warrenty to fall back on
ive heard the 9.25 off the RT is direct bolt up but is it a lot tougher and is it really a direct fit?
This is on a 2002 3.9 v6 Quad 3.55 diff 4x4

Message: Nothing has broke in it yet, it just appears to be worn out
What leads me to say that is the oil leaking out by the wheels, the heat produced in a 2 mile trip,and the loud howling sound i get when driving

Message: sounds like you need to replace your axle bearings. Dont blame the whole axle because of that. Those do go out and need replacing from time to time.
they are not that hard to do. Just gotta do a little work (or have a little done, which ever you prefer).
Lift the back and put it on jack stands (stands under shock mounts)... dont forget to block the front wheels!
* remove the wheels and brake drums
* remove the diff cover (start from bottom so it leaks out.. doesnt gush)
* put truck in neutral
* spin carrier until you can get to the pinion shaft retaining bolt
* remove pinion shaft retaining bolt
* remove pinion shaft
* push each axle in towards the center of diff
* remove c-clips from each axle
* pull out each axle
* pull out old bearing from end of axle tube
* replace bearing
install in reverse
now that's just narrowed down to give you an idea.
Now getting a bigger axle isnt gonna prevent your axle bearings from wearing out.

Message: they might... but they might not because an axle bearing is a wear out kinda item.
good luck!

Message: well if they dont repair it, it gives me an excuse to change gearing >:) to 3.92s or 4.10s if the 4.10s fit
Do u happen to have a link or a how to on adjusting lash? Ive done it on a dana 44 but was told its way different and a lot less annoying on the dakota
Thanks

Message: the hard part is changing the pinion gear. Setting the ring gear is easy as hell because of the way the corporate axles are set up. They have spacers with splines around them and you just set it in there on a set of splines until you have it just right. I took pix when i did my install and i'll see if i can find them to let you know what i was talking about.
This would be a great time to install shorter gears. The gear install kit comes with the axle bearings... that's why i have the exra ones. I was too lazy to install mine and never used them.

Message: yeah im back again
Dealer has adjusted lash for a 3rd time(i am now under lemon law even though its very worthless in my state)
the Pinion area on houseing gets so hot u can barely touch it My infrared thermo shows 130 F after 2 miles
keep in mind this truck hauls 1 ton loads in its bed for long trips and hauls a trailer for long trips or multiple long trips
So what brand of bearing and gears lasts the longest?
What brand does Ma Mopar originally use? so i dont get them again...
The place im having do the work wants to put in a certain name brand bearing thats used in all there racing applications or... they said u may need a more heavy duty rear end
So im here again also asking what rear end can i put in? Or should i take my rear end to a machine shop and have them chop it up to fit different internals?
those are my options since i found out my 7 /70,000 warrenty wont cover anything past the drive shafts.
If anyone knows the specs of the original bearings that would be very helpful info
Sorry fot he long post and
Thanks in advanced.
