Message: Must be the season for transmission problems. I have a 92 3.9, I'm going to have to make a cross country trip (VA to CA) and my tranny has been slipping from 1st to 2nd gear for about 6 mths. I had a BG tranny flush, and have seen the slip problem improve. I've been quoted about 2700 to drop a rebuilt in. Am going to talk to aamco tomorrow about rebuilding my existing tranny (hoping for less than 2700). Looking for some advice on whether the tranny might make it as is, or if there's something less expensive I could try. I'm planning to ditch the truck in a couple years once our other vehicle is paid off. Any advice?

Message: Did they adjust the bands? And did they use ATF+3 or ATF+4? It must have either of these fluids to work properly.

Message: I know they didn't adjust the bands, and they used ATF+4.

Message: It would be worth a band adjustment. Unfortunately, I believe that the band adjustment that would affect the 1-2 shift is inside the transmission. You have to drop the pan, which means another fluid change.
You can always try tightening the band adjustment on the outside of the transmission first to see if it helps.
Also, you may want to replace your throttle position sensor. Mine was out of range on the low side. So even when I gave it a little gas, the computer still thought that the truck was at idle. Therefore, the pressure govenor solenoid in the tranny didn't increase the pressure like it should, and it caused it to slip until I was at almost mid-throttle. Once I replaced the throttle position sensor, it was fixed. (This is an easy sensor to replace and it is on your throttle body.)

Message: The band adjustment is a must-do deal(do both band adjustments), as well as the fluid/filter. Also, unless I'm 180-out on something, the '92's don't have governor pressure solenoids. Through 1995, the governor pressure is controlled by the throttle kickdown cable.
The electronic governor appeared in 1996 models. You can adjust the kickdown cable, but if the bands haven't been adjusted, that's your first job.

Message: gen1dak, you're correct. The only solenoids in the 92 are the lockup torque converter and the O/D solenoid.
The FSM says that the rear band (inside) is only used for reverse and for 1st gear in "1" selector range. The front band is accessible from outside and will affect the slippage of 1-2 shifts. I tightened it too much once and got a very harsh 1-2 shift. Sounds like his may be too loose.
To adjust that band, you need a 3/4" deepwell socket for the locknut, and a 5/16" octagonal socket for the adjusting screw. The damn thing is square with beveled corners. NAPA has the socket for $6.60 - P/N NB810. I had to order it, got it overnight.

Message: Just got back from AAMCO, I figured I'd let someone more knowledgeable than me take a looksee. It didn't take to long... apparently my CV cable (throttle cable?) had snapped off where it connects to the throttle body lever. They jury rigged it for me to get through weekend, and will have it replaced on monday. No slips on the way home, so maybe I got lucky with this thing. I'll definately do the band adjustment this weekend. Thanks for all the help so far!!

Message: My 1996 V6 with the A500 or A518 has decided not to shift out of 3rd gear at any speed. I am able to put it in park and in reverse, but no 1st or 2nd gear at all. This was an overnight thing, it ran fine yesterday.
I have recently replaced the throttle position sensor (TPS) about 3 months ago to fix an emission problem then I had to replace the ECU at the same time because the TPS did not correct the problem, but the new ECU did.
Does anybody have any ideas?
