 Subject: 90 transmission swap

I have a 90 2wd ext cab dakota with a 3.9 and 4 speed auto, i think the tranny is going bad it makes a screaching noise when it warms up, i also have a 93 2wd reg cab dakota with a 3.9 and 4 speed and wanted to know if i can just switch the trannys or would it be better to switch the motor and tranny, i already put the 93 tranny in the 90 and it moved around the driveway but started pouring fluid out of the bellhousing, but i might have damaged the front seal when installing it, anyone know if the trannys really are the same? (the 93 has a bent frame is why im not driving that by the way)

Yeah, you can just do the trannys...an even swap.

Oooops, forgot about the speedo-drive. The '90 used a cable-drive, the '93 didn't if I remember correctly. I believe the '93 still has the teeth in the shaft to drive the earlier unit, however. Break out the flashlight and have a peek.
