Subject: Tranny Problem, please help...

Hi everyone,
I know you're all probably tired of hearing this, but I have a tranny problem I can't seem to figure out. I've searched the forums and can't find anything similar. I have a 99 Dak V6 2WD, 93,000 miles. When I start out driving everything is going fine, then after about 15min. (possibly after its warmed up?) it will downshift if I let off the gas or slow down. I'm assuming it downshifts from 4 to 3, the RPM goes up to about 2300@60mph. I've tried adjusting the TV cable, and that didn't solve it. A couple of times I've gotten a chk engine light with the code reading "Shift Mechanism 3-4".
Could it be something simple, like a slight leak around the transmission oil pan, or the bands need adjusted? I've noticed there is a slight stain around the pan, but when I check the fluid level it isn't low.
I'm about ready to take it in to the shop, just thought I'd see some opinions first. Thanks for your help!

I tried resetting the computer, which didn't change anything. I took it to a tranny shop, and they said they couldn't diagnose because there was another chk engine code in it - low charging system voltage. I don't understand how that can affect a tranny shop's ability to fix my truck. Anyways, its going to the dealer Monday, I'll let you all know what the diagnosis is.

Thanks!

Well I took it to the Dodge Stealership today...They found a chk engine code P0783 "3-4 Shift Solenoid". They wanted $1600(no joke!) just to take out the tranny and "inspect" it. I told them no thanks.

Judging by this chk engine code, is it pretty safe to say that its the 3-4 shift solenoid causing the problem?

Thanks!

Micah,
Call Wayne at APS.
See if he has an inexpensive solution for you. At least he'll give an idea of what you should pay at a local shop. He also sells some more robust components to replace the some the weaker stock components. He is a Dodge tranny expert. Seriously, I really think you'll find it worth the phone call.

I do believe the solenoid you need to change is quite cheap...and fairly easy to do. I think there's only 2 solenoids on the tranny. One you have to drop the pan to get to, but that really isn't that difficult as far as I know. Either way...if you diagnose the problem exactly, it may be a very cheap and simple fix.

According to Wayne @ APS, there are a few reasons this could be happening:

faulty OD Solenoid
Vehicle Speed Sensor or TPS
mechanical failure of the OD Unit

Since my OD works until warmed up, we concluded it still worked. I will be changing my TPS tomorrow to see if that fixes it.

What ended up being the problem? My buddy has a '99 with the 318 V8 and it is receiving the same code. Although it is the same code, his problem is that the transmission is holding in gear too long. The parts place says there is not TPS on a '99 with the 318. Any Suggestions (other than call Kurt)?

Dave,
When my Dodge tranny eventually acts up, I will call Wayne@APS. I have worked with him and found him honest and knowledgeable(understatement); two things not easy to find associated with those who claim to know transmissions.
