Subject: '89 gear ratio IP: Logged
Message: I have a '89 dakota shortbed with the 3.9 v6. It has a different rear end than stock. The speedo is 10 to 15 mph faster than you are actually going. How can I find out what gearing is in the rear end? Also is it worth the money to put a 4 barrel carb and headers/flowmaster exh. on it? It has just turned 139,000

Message: take the back cover off the rear housing,it,s stamped on the ring gear.
may be the trans has been changed and it has the wrong odometer gear in the trans.by adding or taking one tooth on this gear will speed up or slow down mph by 2 on the speedometer.
these can be bought at a dealer.

Message: When I bought the truck, I was told that it has a different rear end in it. I think that it may be a rear end from a 4x4. First gear really crawls, so i drive it like a four speed, starting off in second gear.

Message: sounds like the truck may have had 3.21 gears and they replaced them with 3.55 or 3.92

Message: Look at the underhood decal, it tells the stock axle ratio.
