Subject: trade Dakota for another Dakota... IP: Logged
Message: Hi Y'all.
Okay, I have a few questions/helpfull advice needed.
I currently have a 1996 sport club cab 4WD auto dakota with 122,000 miles. it is a base dakota with no extra options, new tires, battery, water pump, front brakes, and hoses. along with regualar mantiance.
The truck I am looking to buy, but don't know if this is wise or not is
1995 reg cab short bed standard with 40,000 miles (it is my grandfathers, bought new). everything is in great shape doesn't get driven much, 2 or 3 times a week down town and back.
is this a wise choice? to go from a big 4WD truck, to a smaller truck that is a I4.
I would love the hear pros and cons that you guys can think of...
thanks

That's my only question. That 4 cylinder is a dog and you are
losing room in the cab. If that's what you need to make you
happy though, go for it. Seems like the truck you are trading
with will really be underused. You'll get better mileage that's for
sure.

Message: better gas mileage is of concern. also my trans is starting to go, said so but two different trans shops. tried replacing the sensors, but that didn't do it. there are a lot of other things that need fixing in my current truck.
I will be going off to college in september and a truck that will get me back and forth on weekends is good.
still thinking about it. trying to out weight all of the pros and cons.
thanks for the reply

Message: in going back and rereading my post,
what I meant was, that we would trade trucks, for the purpose of him trading mine into a dealer.
I think I am losing money in this deal, but anything to help him out with buying a newer vechical.
another thing I was looking at was the lower insurance cost. that 4WD makes a huge difference when you are 18 and paying your own... big difference.
thanks for replying

Message: Have you thought about selling your truck for cash, giving your grandfather a fair price for his truck (or at least the same as he would get in trade for yours), and pocketing the difference? If you did I can't imagine you not walking away with the same swap plus another grand or so (at least) in your pocket.
Black Book says there's about $1800 difference between trade-in and retail on the 96 4x4.

Message: If you are going to commute to college, then the four cylinder truck will be better on gas, and probably more reliable due to the lower mileage. however, if you are going away for college and you will be hauling your laundry and other stuff to live in the dorms, I'd much rather have the extended cab. That way your stuff won't get wet... at least the stuff you put inside the truck.
Does 4x4 really make that big of a difference? I have a 93 4x4 and the insurance isn't that bad. It is about $50 per month. I'm 24. I can't imagine that getting a 2wd truck would be much cheaper.
But, if you think that repairing your truck isn't worth the money, then take the 2wd truck. A slow truck that runs is better than a 4x4 that doesn't.

Message: Have you driven the lil 4 banger? With a stick it may not be too bad (still not a V-6 or V-8), if I remember right, its a 2.5 L, pretty good engine just may be doggy in the Dak. Timing belt will eventually need to be replaced (100,000+ miles) and do ocassionally have head gasket problems, other than that they are pretty good. Owner of my company has a 88 mini-van w/ the 2.5 and 170,000+ miles, and he doesn't baby it and it runs good. Also, a 5-speed is probabally a more reliable tranny, so ya gotta ask yourself: can I live w/o the 4X4, less power, and no club cab? If so, I'd go for it!! What kind of gas milage does the 4-banger get? 23 or 24 mpg?

Message: The lil 4 banger gets about 25 miles around town, thats with me driving it. I drive it more then he does.
I have thought about just out right selling mine, and buying his...
when you are 18 that 4WD sticker on the truck, makes about a $250 difference every 6 months (thats when I pay the insurance, right now I pay about $800 for 6 months)
still wondering if I can live without the extra cab, the 4 banger is a stick, so it is peppy enough for me to get going.
I would say his would beat mine in a 1/4 mile drag hands down.

Message: mm, under your circumstances that may be a pretty good thing for you. it may be hard to sell yourself if it needs work, unless you just about give it away. with the cost of gas nowadays, and you going home on week ends, that 2.5 may become your best friend. put a cheap tonneau cover on it to keep your stuff dry. i think i'd do it! get through college and then buy another s/c 4x4.

Message: vin dodge - if the 4x4 needs alot of work then he'd take even more of a beating on the trade - still better off $-wise with a private sale.
