Subject: Suggestion for a transmission cooler IP: Logged
Message: I tow a small boat at hwy speeds typically for 1.5 to 2.5 hours to get to my favorite fishing grounds. I have the automatic transmission with the taller (lower RPM) gears. I'm thinking of adding a transmission cooler to the truck. What would suggest?
Thanks

Message: Do it! Your tranny will live longer. I have one that I haven't installed on my truck yet (haven't been towing anything either) but I did install one on a full-size Dodge van I used to have. I installed a temp gauge for the trans at the same time and then towed a U-Haul box trailer (loaded top-to-bottom and stem-to-stern) from Alabama to Indiana. Even with the cooler my trans oil temp would hit 220 degrees when I was driving "in traffic" (less airflow through cooler & radiator when someone is in front of you) and would drop to about 185-190 on the open road. The trans oil starts breaking down at temps in the low to mid 200's. Who knows what it would have been without the cooler. Get one installed; you won't notice it but your tranny won't self-destruct either.
