Message: Just had my carb rebuilt for 1987 6cyl, 2wd and have a couple of questions before reinstalling it.
This Carburetor sits on top of a spacer that is about an inch high and looks like it's made of aluminum and looks like it's dodge oem. there is a gasket that fits between the spacer and the carb. Between the spacer and the manifold is another spacer, it looks like it might be made of plastic or some other material. It's rigid but somewhat pliable.
It's about a quarter of an inch thick.
Can someone tell me what this piece is for. Also do I need a regular gasket between it and the aluminum spacer and/or between it and the manifold. Also, should I replace it or do I just reuse it. It looks like it may have a gasket stuck on either side of it that could be soaked off but I'm a fraid to 'f' with it in case I cant get or shouldnt get a replacement for it.
I havent had a chance to get back to the carb rebuild place to ask them yet. Hoping to save a trip if anyone can help out.
Oh, also, they didnt replace the idle selenoid when they rebuilt the carb, they just put the old one back on, should I bother to replace this piece?
Thanks

Message: Thanks. I stopped in at Pep Boys last night. The guy at the counter didnt know what it was. It turns out though that it's the 'base' gasket. It's basically two regular gaskets with a 1/4 inch spacer betwen them all sandwiched together. I guess the spacer protects the carb/carb spacer from the heat / flex of the intake manifold.
I'd seen the 'base' gasket mentioned in some online catalogs but they never showed a picture of it.

Message: If it looks okay, reuse it. Get some Permatex High Tack Gasket Sealant http://www.permatex.com/products/prodidx.asp?automotive=yes&f_call=get_item&item_no=80062
or some Copper SPRAY-A-GASKETŪ Hi Temp Adhesive Sealant http://www.permatex.com/products/prodidx.asp?automotive=yes&f_call=get_item&item_no=80696
Use that to insure a tight seal. It's worth the money. I've used High Tack Gasket Sealant. Get a cheap 1" bristle brush to put it on with. It comes with a cheesy applicator brush that is stuck to the lid. The stuff is real gooey and stringy, but worth the trouble. I had to thin it out with carb cleaner for the other carb gaskets so it wouldn't clog the small holes, but the gaskets you are talking about don't have that problem. Only one big hole and the bolt holes.
OI reused the old one because the one that came with carb rebuild kit by Borg Warner was crap and was missing a steel grommet for one of the bolt holes.
It's real important to insure that you have no leaks, especially on these gaskets which are below the throttle plates and subject to high intake manifold vacuum pressure.
