Subject: Low compression? IP: Logged
Message: I did a compression test last night on my 93 4x4 with the 3.9. I had 5 cylinders that were right around 120 psi, and one cylinder that was at 90 psi. I did the test on a hot engine, but I didn't add any oil to the cylinders. Should I be concerned about this? It only has 160,000 miles on it!

that's a big difference... but i wouldnt be complaining if i had 160K on the motor. Try adding a little bit of oil and see what that does. If the compression goes up... rings are a little worn. Also, what cylinder was it?

Message: Yes there is, doesnt the drain plug still work or is it rusted in place from being so old? You just need to spray it with wd40 then use a wrench to remove the plug in the oil pan. make sure you have a pan handy to catch all the oil that comes out or it will make a mess. After all the oil comes out take your wrench and reinstall the plug. There will be a cap on the top of the motor that says "oil" that is were you pour the new synthetic oil in.
Amsoil is the best, it should fix your problems.

Message: Ok....
I am not switching to a synthetic on this truck. It's not worth it. Oil has nothing to do with compression in this case, and a TPS mod certainly doesn't.

Message: Do the tps mod, relocate the iat then switch to amsoil. Its a proven fact it helps these trucks run better. Just ask amsoil guy (the site sponsor). I dont see why it wouldnt help compression if it makes the truck run better.

Guy in the POOR house..
Do as Intense Dak says - spray a little oil
in that 'low' cylinder and see what that does
to the reading - higher = rings
Then -go from there = If you really want
rebuild or get a new engine -rebuilt or otherwise
But even as your engine now is - it should go
for a long while yet..........and not on
synthetic oil - just a good quality normal oil.

Message: That's what I needed to hear... I've driven it for the past year and a half this way, (20,000 miles or so) and it's just a reliable old engine. I'm not planning to have any work done on it to bring the compression up in that one cylinder.
Dan, what do you think would happen if I removed my intake and throttle body and did a compression test? Did you know that I can still do a compression test without a throttle position sensor and an incoming air temperature sensor?

Anyway, I'll try to be civil about this. Dan, I want to explain how to do a compression check so that you don't look like an ass in the future. A compression check simply measures the compression in the cylinder through the spark plug hole. You literally thread a pressure gauge into each cylinder, one at a time, where the spark plug normally goes. You disconnect the ignition components (coil wire) so that the engine won't start, and then you crank it for a couple seconds. The guage measures the pressure.
The pressure in the cylinder has nothing to do with the incoming air or fuel. You can do a compression check with an engine on a hoist with a starter connected (and a 12volt supply).

Message: Dan,
the only things that would cause low compression in a motor is because of worn piston rings, tore up cylinder walls, bad head gasket, worn valve seals or a cracked head. Please explain how advancing your timing a hair and moving your fuel up a little is gonna add compression to that cylinder?
I been here longer, and had a much faster V6 than you.
just curious, what would you recommend a person do if they had the same problem with a motor that didnt have a TPS or IAT... rotate the distributor?

If you are as smartand fast as you say you are, tell us all the mods on your truck. Tell us EXACTLY how you did them, and also tell us how the TPS and IAT are the most important parts of the "motor". (I thought motors were electric). So tell us Dan, are you 12 years old and trying to get your sh its and giggles for the day? Why don't you pay us all a favor and go play in traffic.......during your 5th grade recess hour.
