Subject: Front Wheel Bearings IP: Logged
Message: '99 Dakota 2wd 68,000 mi. I am experiencing a faint squeaking noise in the front passenger side wheel. To my knowledge the wheel bearings have never been serviced...Is it a pain in the ass to repack the wheel bearings?

Message: No it's pretty easy but wheel bearings usually don't squeek. If you have had your brake rotors replaced then they have been repacked.

Message: According to the factory service manual the wheel bearings are in a sealed unit. Nothing to repack, just get a new hub and don't try to reuse that nylock nut on there. I have only seen the hub at the dealer.

Message: Is it a squeek squeek noise or a constant squeeking... Squeek squeek = warped rotors... Constant may = bearings, but the best way to tell if bearings, is simply pull off the little center plastic cover thingy on the wheel... If greesy behind then bearings are gone, if not then they're fine... Sounds more like brakes though due to the fact that these seem to warp very easily on the dakotas, which is why I went with the Extremes from Auto Zone, before even turning the originals again... No more warping + extremely nice stopping ; ))
If squeeks only when brakes are applied then you need new pads, which with only that many miles, you shouldn't due to these things being very thick "1 inch" unlike most others... Have seen some last the life of the truck itself... BUT not many due to the long lifes of these trucks...

Message: AND I forgot to mention, but the constant squeeking can also be a stuck caliper causing the pad on one side or the other of the rotor to constantly rub, build up heat, and make the noise your referring to...

Message: Chrysler does not sell the individual wheel bearings. I wanted to change/repack my bearings when I did my brakes/rotor's. Went to dealership and they told me bearings are nonserviceable. Also, the haynes book says the same. If your bearings are shot, you have to replace the entire hub assembly. ( BTW, it's 128+ tax here in NY )
