is there any way to tell what kind of rear end you have on an 87. I looked at it yesterday and I didn't see any letters or number (I might be looking in the wrong place.)

if it has 10 bolts, its a 8.25" (most likely)
if it has 12 bolts, its a 9.25"

If you are looking for the gear ratio you can try calling the dealer
parts department and giving them your VIN.
