what rear end gears do the 87's have.
I have a 3-speed trans. can it with the rear end run 70-75 mph without going over 3000 rpms.
do the 3.9l v6's last long?

Most likely

3.21 or 3.55 but could also be 3.91

the 3.21 with a 3 speed will run around 3000 rpm
at 70 75 you must remember there is no over drive
on the old 3 speed trans

The V6 motor will run 250,000 or more with
good maintainance easily

hey Larry seems like you get em before I do. But I guess I don't be on this computer enough to get them before you but I must say you are right in what you say. Goodoledak its best to run at 60-65 on long distance trips it you go on any losts of old dakota drivers 87-88 make this mistake and run well over 70-75 mph. so keep it in the paint and stay away from the 70 line and your good to go. plus I've seen a guy get 387,567 miles on his and it still runs PRETTY DARN GOOD TO HAVE THAT MANY MILES ON IT! I couldn't believe what I saw or heard when this one came on me.

Tips: do all maintainance on time
drive below 70 on long distance trips
don't dog it out (lead foot)

I got to admit I get on my old 87 every now and then to get on the highway and just to hear the engine rev.
