Subject: water killing my ignition...

I have a hard time starting my 2000 Dakota 3.9 every morning after a good rain. At first I thought maybe there was water in the fuel system (tank). But one day on my way home, I drove though a lot of water on the road (flooded) and it stalled right out. I coasted to the next parking lot and got out to look. The intake and air filter was completely dry so no water got sucked in, but it still wouldn't start. It was getting gas because I could smell it. No fire. After a couple minutes I got back in and tried to start it again. It started right up after a couple burps. (flooded) Sorry for the long post, but any ideas what electrical part could be so explosed that would cause this? I just replaced the plugs and wires last summer. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.

Well it's usually a wet distributor cap and rotor that causes this.

I guess that shows how much I know. For some reason I thought those went away since they have an electronic ignition system. Oh well. Thanks for the help.

and wonders if ron1n ever looked under his hood ??? hey dude open your hood, now take a long look at the engine bay by the fire wall, you know the part near the passenger compartment just under the windsheild. at the top of the engine behind the airhat you will see a round device that has a bunch of large diameter wires coming out of it that your mechanic calls a DISTRIBUTOR that is all electronic inside.

The coil is more exposed to water it is located on the passenger side by the serpentine belt tensioner. Check out the coil wire and the conecting wires.

Just start it at night take a spray bottle of
water and spray plug wires cap and coil untill it
dies than you will know whats bad and replace it.

If wires you can spray them with silicon spray it
will seal them from water best to replace them
though

Well, I replaced my distributor cap and rotor. But it didn't help. I pulled my spark plugs and I think I found the problem. I replaced the spark plugs and wires also. I put anti-sieze (sp) on the threads and dielectric grease in all the wire caps. Hopefully that will take care of it. Thanks for the help, even if there was a bit of sarcasm in there.

I believe you should have it licked. wires, cap & rotor should fix most moisture problems. I do have a friend that had reoccuring moisture problems on a 318 until the distributor was replaced.
