 Subject: 95 Dakota won't crank

I have a 95 dakota sport V6 that on occasion (especially when below 10 degrees) will not turn over. I hear a click but no crank. Good battery and connections. When it finally does crank, it cranks nice and fast and starts fine. Thought it might be the solenoid, part man said you have to replace the complete starter. Is this correct? Any way to repair the old one? Thanks in advance for any help. Stuck in Alaska.

Well, here's what it says in my Haynes Repair Manual...
"Chapter 5
12) Starting System - General Information
The Starter motor assembly installed on these engines uses a planteray gear reduction drive. This type of starter motor assembly is services as a complete unit. If any component of the starter motor fails, including the solenoid, the entire assembly must be replaced."
So yeah, I'd say probally true.

It is the sontacts in the starter. I replace them all the time, real easy to do. You have to remove the starter and take the solenoid cover off and the contacts are right there. The hard part is finding the starter contacts. If you can it is a cheap fix.

my dakota knocks when you start it up it sounds like its coming from the oil cap area it also sounds like the fly wheel i guess what else can knock on an engine and if it is near the oil cap region how much to fix what could it be and how much do you think it would be to replace a fly wheel

when i first start the car up it is not a loud knock but if i rev it it gets louder like something is spinning or moving and hitting something but when i turn the car off and start it up it is very faint also when i push the clutch in it weakins drastically if not atol
