Subject: At a loss for ideas...need help IP: Logged
Message: I have an '87 4x4 3.9L Dakota. I just dropped a remaned engine in about 5 months ago and just have the carb rebuilt last week. The problem started a few months back and I thought the carb rebuild was the answer but i guess not?? My truck will be driving along just fine and out of the blue to will start surging and chugging, like it was thirsty for gas but can't get it fast enough. The floats were bad but replaced at time of carb rebuild. The fuel pump and filter are new ??? I just can't figure it out and I hate feeling like I am going to get stranded somewhere. Any ideas, egr system, charcoal canister needs repl or cleaned if possible. Someone suggested the cat, but new cat and duals were installed less than 3 years ago. I am at a loss and would appreciate your help.

Message: Did you replace the EGR with the Reman engine ?
May be ' sticking ' in "on " position !?
Was intake replaced , or well cleaned out ?
Do you have an inline fuel filter to
eliminate possible water in gas ?

Message: check your fuel pressure and the amount of fuel flow,
also the strainer in the tank may be hard or plugged,
or bad gas line sucking air
could be ignition, coil heatting up causing miss
or the dist may be wore

Message: and says even though the filter is new it could be plugged with debries from the tank. the pump also can be not producing enough fuel pressure even a new or remaned pump can be not pumping enough. some carbs have a stainer type filter built into the fuel intake and that might be plugged too. the thing sounds like fuel starvation, I had it with a 92 minivan and the only way to cure it was to replace the fuel filer every few months or so, the filter was doing it's job however by filtering out rust chunks coming from the old style steel gas tank, newer trucks/cars use plastic.
