I currently drive an 87 V6 2x4 Dak that has ok power & mileage for a 6cyl. I just test drove an 87 V6 4x4 that seemed to mave only 1/2 as much power. The 4x4 has 180k mi and the 2x4 has 120k, would the high miles explain the power difference? Could I expect either one to go over 200k? How about swaping motors? Thanks.

the 4x4 may have had bigger tires on there, and that increases "drag". Was it lifted at all? The 4x4 has a 3.9L engine, and the 2x4 has a 2.5L engine. Did the 2x4 have any modifications to it. there are a lot of variables in that sort of thing.

The 2x4 is pure stock. I drive it every day. The 4x4 tires look a little big but not much. Also th4 4x4 looks stock, the seller didn't mention any mods. At 180k could the 4x4 motor be getting tired? Maybe just a good tune up and some easy mods would make a difference.

George-- I have a 3.9L Generation I Dakota TBI just sitting on a shelf right now. It looks like new and has been completely refurbished by Holley. Looks and smells like new. Comes complete with two injectors and several of the sensors and gaskets. If you total up all the things it includes and bought from a dealer, it would go for about $1200. I've been thinking about selling it since I dont use it at all. I got it from an auction thinking I'd need it, but havent used it yet. Interested?

Its normal for 4X4's to have less power while using more gas that 2X4's. The reason is simple, as tiger said, they usually have bigger tires, but most of the difference comes from the transmission. The 4x4 transmission is bigger and takes more power to turn even when 4wheel drive isn't engaged. The front drive components of the tranny are always turning whether in 4 or 2 wheel drive. Thusly, 4X4's, in general, use more gas while having less power.

I have an 87 4X4 Dak, and i have many mods on it. I was going up a steep hill the other day at 70 MPH and it was gaining speed so i had to let of the gas.. before i would be lucky to keep the truck going 65 with the pedal to the floor....

I own a 87 3.9 4X4 and their is no way that it does 100 mph it has the suregrip rear and I am running the Wrangler tires that are supposed to be on 87 4x4's. It will hit 85 which is all the 87's register anyways so you are taking a shot in the dark by saying 100 and I have 198,000 on mine and at 185,000 I hit a telephone pole doing 60 and it tore the bed up and made my front passenger suspenion go 90* degree's which messed it up and made the wheel sit offset alittle but I drove it home and bought a new bed and windshield and fixed the suspenion and it still works great I bought a 97 x-cab 3.9 2x4 loaded last year so I let the 87' sit for long periods and in the cold of winter when its like -10 it will fire right up and I will lock in the 4x4 and off I go through the snow and whatever I love my dakota's and that all I got to say.

IT ONLY PEGS OUT WITH THE REAR WIND HELP. WITH TRUCK LOWERED HELPS WITH STABILITY AT THEM SPEEDS. UNHOOK THE 2 WIRES GOING INTO THE CARB (FEED BACK SELINOID) GIVES IT A LITTLE MORE HUMP. IF I EVER WRECK MY DAK I'LL FIX IT TOO.. GOING V-8 SOMEDAY.

Anybody got any ideas on where I can find one?

Also..I don't know if I'll be able to get back on this site so I would be greatful if you could reply directly to my e-mail address: don@mohlernixon.com

Thanks for any help on this!

Hey Vern,
What is your price on the computer and carb. Separate and together. I'm looking for a CPU for my 87 4WD 3.9L Dakata. What elevation are you at, also? I hear they have a low or high altitude chip.
Thank you,
Patrick

To get more power if you can't change carbs, it to good with a good free flowing muffler, K&N air filter, MSD ignition, low resistance wires (like MSD super conductor) and gapping the spark plugs out to about 50 or 55 thousands. Headers will also help. I had an 87 that had a bad O2 sensor, there was big drop in power and mileage. Once it was replaced power and mieage came back up. After doing the above mentioned mods and adding a bed cover, I could easily get 17 to 19mpg around town and 21 to 23 on the freeway. Hope this helps.

92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.
